    Two art instruction books entitled Krüsi's Drawing: Analytic Series, Nos. 5 and 6, published by D. Appleton & Company, New York, copyright 1873. Each consists of lithographs, with blank facing pages for copying. Book No. 5 is 20 pages in length, with 10 sets of illustrations; Book No. 6 is 24 pages in length, with 12 sets of illustrations. The front cover of each is identical, with lavish decorative elements. The back cover of each contains publishers' advertisements for Miss Youmans's New Botanical Series, offered for sale by D. Appleton & Co. Book No. 5 consists of images of animals, including birds, dogs, horses and rabbits. All of the images have been copied by a previous owner, and there are several additional original sketches, as well as letters done in calligraphy style in midnight blue ink. The black ink ownership stamp of Fred E. Howe is in several places throughout the book, including the front cover. The illustrations in Book 6 are primarily of the human figure and some of its parts, including hands, feet, and faces. Only three of the images have been copied.

    One art instruction book entitled Krüsi's Drawing: Perspective Series, No. 12, published by D. Appleton & Co., New York, copyright 1874 and 1879. This book contains 12 black and white images on 24 pages (one image per leaf). Space is provided next to each image for copying. These images include flowers, plants, vases and a landscape scene. The front cover is decoratively bordered and illustrated. The back cover is a publisher's advertisement for Krusi's Inventive Drawing, "Adopted in nearly Five Hundred Cities and Town within Six Months after its Publication." None of the images have been copied.

    One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled The Calumet Prize Drawing Book, No. 1, published by Calumet Baking Powder Company, Chicago, ca. 1902. This booklet contains 6 leaves of black and white lithograph illustrations, each covered by a leaf of tracing paper. The inside of the front cover, as well as the recto of the first illustration, contain advertisements for Calumet Baking Powder. Two illustrated advertising rhymes are found on the verso of the last leaf and on the inside of the back cover. Instructions for use of this drawing book are found on the inside of the front cover. Some of the illustrations for copying are: a rhinoceros, a train, tulips and a can of Calumet Baking Powder. The front cover is a chromolithograph illustration of children dressed for a parade. "M. Umbdenstock & Co." (presumably the lithographer) is printed at the bottom of the inside of the back cover.

    Two drawing books entitled Krone's Paragon Series of Drawing Books, Nos. 2 and 9, revised, published by Krone Bros., New York, copyright 1905. Book no. 2 is 16 pages in length, and is a series of line exercises, progressing from simple, single lines to combinations of lines to construct images such as flowers, patterns and shapes. The front cover of both books are bordered and illustrated, including a life-size pencil diagonally positioned across the cover. The back cover of each contains general directions for drawing, materials needed, and a listing of the titles in the series. The inside of the front and back covers of Book No. 2 provides definitions of terms, with illustrations of those terms. All of the exercises have been filled in by a previous owner. Book No. 9 consists of 8 leaves, each with an image on the upper half of the page and space below for copying. These images include a rabbit, a pig, a horse and a deer. Each of the 8 leaves is protected by a tissue guardsheet. The inside of the front and back covers contain the same definitions, explanations and illustrations as those found in Book No. 2. The cover of Book No. 9 is vertically oriented, in that the cover is lifted from bottom to top, but the interior pages are turned as usual, opening to the left. "Annette Paquin" is written in ms. along the outside of the border in the lower right-hand corner of the front cover of Book No. 9. All of the illustrations have been copied in pencil by a previous owner.

    One drawing book entitled Drawing Horses, by Victor Perard, published by Pitman Publishing Corporation, New York and Chicago, copyright 1944. This book is 64 unnumbered pages in length, and provides step-by-step instructions for drawing horses and similar animals, such as mules and donkeys. All of the images are in black and white, and most pages contain at least some instructional text. The front cover is printed in brown on green paper; it features several images below the title from within the book. The imagery on the back cover is a duplicate of the front cover. "$1.00" is printed in the lower right-hand corner of the front and back covers. The inside of the front cover is blank; the inside of the back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "Pitman Art Series by Victor Perard." Laid inside the front cover are two newspaper clippings, dated 1951 and 1947 respectively.

    One manufacturer's advertisement book entitled Slate Drawings, Useful & Instructive, published by Belding Bros. & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1910, "compliments of Balding Bros. silk thread." This promotional piece for Balding Bros. silk thread contains 12 unnumbered pages of white-on-black illustrations designed to look like chalk drawings on slates. The inside of the front cover promotes this edition of Belding Bros. & Co.'s Drawing Book. The inside back cover contains illustrated instructions for crocheting a "four-in-hand scarf crocheted from Belding's silk." The title on the front cover is within a drawing slate frame.
