    One drawing book/manufacturer's advertisement entitled Packer's Prize Drawing Book, No. 1, published by Packer Mfg. Co., New York, a patent medicine manufacturer, copyright 1886. This promotional booklet advertises Packer's Tar Soap; Knapp's Throat Cure and Packer's Cutaneous Charm. It contains advertising images, slogans, affidavits and favorable product testimonies. On the front cover is an image of a seated boy and girl, both of whom are drawing at a table. The inside of the front cover contains the rules for a drawing contest offered by the company, it is dated January 1886. The interior and exterior of the back cover advertise Packer products. Only one of the images has been copied.

    Bartholomew's Drawing Book, New Series, Nos. 1, 2, 5

    Three drawing books, entitled Bartholomew's Drawing Book, New Series, Nos. 1, 2 and 5, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Woolworth, Ainsworth & Co., New York, copyright 1867, 1869, and 1870 respectively. The exercises within each of the three books is comprised of 12 half-sheet numbered exercises interleaved with full-page blank leaves for copying and additional original artwork. Each book progress in level of difficulty, and the books themselves increase in their levels of complexity. Book 1 begins with exercises in drawing horizontal and vertical lines, and continues with using those lines in various combinations and patterns to draw simple designs and decorative forms. All of the exercises have been completed. On the inside front cover are notes and instructions for the series. Book 1 is missing the back cover; instructions for lessons 4 and later are missing. Book 2 incorporates angled straight lines, introduces curved lines, and begins to explore leaf and plant forms. These exercises are considerably more complex than those found in Book 1. Some of the exercises have been completed; primarily those at the very beginning and the very end of the book. The inside front cover contains notes about materials, notes to the teacher, and instructions for lesson 1. The back cover is also lacking. The 12 numbered exercises in Book 5 are of plants and flowers. Some of the images include pansies, lily of the valley, and a rose. Most of the exercises have been copied, and there are additional original drawings, some dated by the artist. The inside of the front cover contains notes about the materials to be used for this book and general remarks. The inside of the back cover contains instructions for using and copying the 12 lessons within the book. The outside back cover is a publisher's advertisement for various items within the "Bartholomew's System of Drawing", including writing and drawing slates, drawing books, drawing cards and a teacher's guide. The paper wrapper added by (presumably) Alice Dodge contains pencil sketches and doodles. "Henry I.[?] Tubbs" is written in ms. on the front covers of Books 1 and 2 in the upper right-hand corner. "Alice Dodge, Sept. 28, 1871" is written in ms., in pencil, across the top cover of Book 5.

    One drawing book entitled Practical Drawing, Art Education Edition, Book 5 by Practical Drawing Company of Chicago and Dallas, copyright 1925. The book contains both black and white and color illustrations, some of which are meant to be copied in the space provided (the facing page); others are studies in color, image, composition or proportion. The front cover features a color illustration of two young girls in mid-19th century dress playing with a stick and hoop on the front steps of a home. The back cover features the logo of the Practical Drawing Company. The insides of the front and back covers are decorated with a pale orange geometric pattern. The contents of this drawing book include a mixture drawing lessons, craft projects and picture studies of both old and modern paintings, posters, and illustrations. Instructions to students for further creative work accompany many of the illustrations and images. "50 [cents symbol]" is written in ms., in blue pencil, on the upper right hand corner of the first leaf inside the front cover.

    One drawing book entitled Drawing Book of Butterflies, published by (compliments of) L.M. Brock & Co., Lynn, Massachusetts, ca. 1910. This drawing book is a promotional piece for Mrs. Dinsmore's Cough and Croup Balsam. It contains 8 pages of black and white images of butterflies and tracing paper in front of each page, for copying. The front and back covers are chromolithographs; the front cover features several butterflies and paint brushes, the back cover image is a little girl in a pink hat, standing next to a vase of roses. The inside front and back cover feature promotional and advertising text. Some of the images have been traced onto the tracing paper, and some of the traced and original images have been colored in with crayons.

    Spencerian Drawing-Book, No. 2

    One drawing book entitled Spencerian Drawing-Book, No. 2, by Henry Hitchings, published by Ivison, Blakeman, Taylor & Co., New York and Chicago, copyright 1871. This book contains 24 lessons, two per a single half sheet, and accompanied by a full-size plain sheet for copying, so that the model lithograph illustration is next to the plain sheet. In this particular booklet, each lesson leaf is bound in backwards, so that Lesson II appears first, and Lesson I is on the verso, and the booklet continues in that manner. General textual instructions and instructions for each of the lessons begin on the inside of the front cover, continue on to the inside of the back cover, and end on the back cover. The lessons progress from simple to more complex images; Lesson I is of simple boxes; later lessons include various pieces of furniture, columns and buckets. Each of the lessons has been completed in pencil, and some are signed in ms. "A.M. Thayer 1874". The front cover is illustrated with a view of a young woman, seated at a writing desk, pencil in hand. Below the title is "Prepared by H. Hitchings, Teacher of Drawing in the English High School of Boston, Massachusetts. Late of the United States Naval School at Annapolis, Maryland." Also on the front cover, in the upper right-hand corner, is "Annie M. Thayer. Sep., Oct. & Nov. 1874.", written in ms.

    One joint drawing and tracing book entitled Drawing and Tracing Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1898. This book is comprised of 8 lithograph plates of images for both copying and tracing, with 8 leaves of tracing paper bound in front of each plate. The front cover is a chromolithograph scene of a little girl, holding a doll and a cat, crossing a wooden bridge and looking at a goat kid in her path. The title is above the picture. The back cover is a blue and white pattern design. The title page reads: Amusement for Little Children. Drawing and Tracing Book. The images for tracing are domestic and farm animals. On the inside of the front cover is some brief text about the benefits of tracing and drawing for children. "Ethel Grant- May 3" is written in ms, in pencil, at the top of the title page.
