One penmanship book entitled Lessons in Lettering: A Series of Practice Books With Text, Examples and Exercises, Book 2 Inclined Single Stroke, by Thomas E. French and William D. Turnbull, published by McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc., New York and London, 1924. This book is 40 pages in length, and is comprised of 20 lessons on numbered sheets. At the head of the first page is the overall lesson for the book: "Inclined Single Stroke Commercial Gothic". Each sheet, or lesson, includes instructional text on the left-hand side of each page opening, and the actual lesson and copying space on the right-hand side. The title on the front cover is within a single-rule frame. The top inside front cover reads: "Second edition, fifth impression". Below that is a listing of materials required for the use of this book, and below that is a brief advertisement for "Lessons in Lettering for Students and Draftsmen: a series of practice books with text examples and exercises." On the inside of the back cover are four variations of a single alphabet and number "face" that are part of Sheet 20. On the back cover is a brief advertisement for several drawing and lettering books. Several publisher's advertisements for drawing books and vocational books are laid in to this lettering book. None of the exercises have been completed.

Bartholomew's Drawing Book, New Series, Nos. 1, 2, 5

Three drawing books, entitled Bartholomew's Drawing Book, New Series, Nos. 1, 2 and 5, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Woolworth, Ainsworth & Co., New York, copyright 1867, 1869, and 1870 respectively. The exercises within each of the three books is comprised of 12 half-sheet numbered exercises interleaved with full-page blank leaves for copying and additional original artwork. Each book progress in level of difficulty, and the books themselves increase in their levels of complexity. Book 1 begins with exercises in drawing horizontal and vertical lines, and continues with using those lines in various combinations and patterns to draw simple designs and decorative forms. All of the exercises have been completed. On the inside front cover are notes and instructions for the series. Book 1 is missing the back cover; instructions for lessons 4 and later are missing. Book 2 incorporates angled straight lines, introduces curved lines, and begins to explore leaf and plant forms. These exercises are considerably more complex than those found in Book 1. Some of the exercises have been completed; primarily those at the very beginning and the very end of the book. The inside front cover contains notes about materials, notes to the teacher, and instructions for lesson 1. The back cover is also lacking. The 12 numbered exercises in Book 5 are of plants and flowers. Some of the images include pansies, lily of the valley, and a rose. Most of the exercises have been copied, and there are additional original drawings, some dated by the artist. The inside of the front cover contains notes about the materials to be used for this book and general remarks. The inside of the back cover contains instructions for using and copying the 12 lessons within the book. The outside back cover is a publisher's advertisement for various items within the "Bartholomew's System of Drawing", including writing and drawing slates, drawing books, drawing cards and a teacher's guide. The paper wrapper added by (presumably) Alice Dodge contains pencil sketches and doodles. "Henry I.[?] Tubbs" is written in ms. on the front covers of Books 1 and 2 in the upper right-hand corner. "Alice Dodge, Sept. 28, 1871" is written in ms., in pencil, across the top cover of Book 5.

How to Draw: The Right and The Wrong Way

One art instruction book entitled How to Draw: The Right and The Wrong Way, by A.S. Avery, published by The University Publishing Co., New York and Baltimore, copyright 1872. Also on the title page: "Illustrated with over one hundred figures. Adapted for use in public and private schools, and prepared expressly for all persons who do not know how to draw, but would like to learn." This book is comprised of 14 individual lessons, each of which consists of an illustrated (lithograph) plate and a numbered half-page of textual guidelines and instruction. The lessons are progressive in that each one builds upon the previous lesson, and they range from basic and introductory to more complex. For example, Lesson 1 is devoted to drawing straight lines; Lesson 4 is for shading "to give more boldness to the figures..."; Lesson 7 is a continuation of learning curved lines, and Lesson 14 is to draw a scene in which an old castle is the focal point. The front cover is elaborately decorated and illustrated; the title and cover vignette are framed by a stick-and-ivy pattern. The vignette pictures three children who are studying and drawing a house. The vignette is signed "Bobbett". On the back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "The Original Duntonian System of Rapid Writing", with a sample page from "Dunton's Drill Exercises in Movement". The insides of the front and back covers are blank. On the verso of the title page is a two-column list of drawing terms and definitions. "Presented to E.J. Loomis by the Author, A.S. Avery. October 1874" is written in ms., in ink, on the upper right-hand corner of the front cover.

Weigall's Drawing Book of Animals, Nos. 2, 5 and 6

Three drawing books entitled Weigall's Drawing Book of Animals, Nos. 2, 5 and 6, published by George Rowney and Company, London, circa 1875?. Each book is comprised of four lithograph plates; the plates in book No. 2 are numbered 5-8; those in book No. 5 are numbered 17-20, and those in book No. 6 are numbered 21-24. Printed below the title on the front cover of each is: "In Twelve numbers, price sixpence each." The inside of the front cover is an advertisement for "George Rowney & Co.'s Colour Boxes"; the inside of the back cover is a publisher's advertisement for art books. The advertisement on the back cover is for "Water Colour Lesson Drawings." Images in No. 2 include a bear and a bull; in No. 5 a kangaroo and a goat; in No. 6 a lion and a deer. A sheet of paper containing original artwork is laid in to each of the three books. "Ida Lill Alice" is written in ms. at the top of the front cover of book No. 2."E.O./B.K." is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of each of the three books.

White's School Series of Industrial Drawing, Free Hand

One drawing book entitled White's School Series of Industrial Drawing, Free Hand, by H.P. Smith, published by Ivison, Blakeman, Taylor & Co., New York and Chicago, copyright 1878. "Engravings by John Karst" appears on the lower right-hand corner of the front cover. This book consists of 16 pages with 15 lessons (lesson 15 is wanting). Each lesson is accompanied by blank space or partial-model for copying by the owner. Some of the items for copying include vases, plants and flowers, Egyptian and Greek ornaments and designs, and pattern designs. The front cover is illustrated with a decorative border and an image of a decorated vase. The inside back cover lists geometric terms and their definitions, as well as quotations from Grammar of Ornament by Owen Jones. The outside back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "White's School Series of Industrial Drawing and Progressive Art Studies." This book is vertically oriented; the spine is along the long side of the book at the top, and is to be opened and used by lifting the cover up, instead of to the right, as usual. Some of the images have been copied in pencil by a previous owner. "Annie S. Todd" is written in ms. at the top of the front cover.

American Drawing-Cards, First Series

One set of drawing cards entitled American Drawing-Cards, First Series, by Walter Smith, published by James R. Osgood & Company, Boston, 1873. This set includes 7 drawing cards, printed on both sides of each card. There are 14 numbered lessons, each with white-on-black lithograph illustrations. Also included is a set of directions: "Rules for the Guidance of Pupils using the American Drawing Cards." On the verso of this card is printed a 5-inch long rule measure. The lessons progress from simple horizontal, vertical and parallel lines (lesson no. 1) to moulding and interlacing forms (lesson no. 14, example 42). The cards are within a protective paper envelope. "Johnnie Fray[?]" is written in ms. at the top of the first card.
