One set of art appreciation posters created by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1926. The set of 55 posters is housed within 5 large envelopes; there are 23 different posters, with duplicate copies of 9 of the 23. All of the posters contain black and white reproductions of photographs. Accompanying the posters within the first folder is a large piece of brown wrapping paper on which is written in ms.: "Mabel Spofford; from Boston Museum of Fine Arts, received April 7. 1956 art appreciation posters." The posters vary in size, but all are large. What follows is a listing of the contents of each envelope; the title at the top of the poster has been transcribed. Two invitations issued by the Boston University Art Department, one is for an art exhibition to be held May 29th to June 2 [1933]; the other for a demonstration "in the process of etching" to be held January 23 [1934?]. Neither invitation is dated with the year; the mailing envelope that accompanies these two invitations is postmarked May 25, 1933. The envelope is addressed, in ms., to "Miss Mabel Spofford, The High School, Gloucester, Massachusetts." Both invitations are folded cards, with original engraved illustrations on the front. Four art reproduction postcards, printed by the Meriden Gravure Company, Meriden, Connecticut, ca. 1935. Each black and white portrait bears a distinct portrait. They are: "Portrait of his Father"; "Lady with a Gold Chain"; "Self Portrait", and "A Lady and Gentleman in Black", all by Rembrandt van Rijn. Title and/or artist has been added, in ms. pencil, to the front sides of the last two postcards. "Printed by the Heliotype Corp., Boston" is printed on the verso of "Self Portrait". Two envelopes of "proof sheets" of photographed examples of student art work

Two envelopes of art reproductions ("proof sheets") of photographed examples of student art work. The "proof sheets" were mailed from James Parton Haney to Mabel Spofford; the brown paper mailing envelopes accompany each set of sheets. Env. 7 contains 18 "proof sheets"; these are photographic sheets, each containing reproduced art examples by art students. Included are images of signs, magazine covers, posters, advertisements, book covers, textiles and other items. Many of the individual art examples are signed by their creators, and most are dated 1919 or 1920. The "proof sheets" are in black and white. Env. 8 contains 12 "proof sheets" of art examples by art students. Each sheet contains several reproduced examples of work. Included are images of decorative and advertising posters for a variety of events, plays, and lectures. Most of the items are signed by their creators, and are dated 1921.
