Retrospective Exhibition of American Art, 1689-1921

One catalog entitled Retrospective Exhibition of American Art, under the direction of Mrs. Albert Sterner Inaugurating the Junior Art Patrons of America. At the bottom of the title page is printed: "May 7 to 21, 1921 Fine Arts Building, 215 West Fifty-Seventh Street, May 6th to May 21st." The catalog is 64 unnumbered pages in length, and contains a listing of the items in the exhibit, and several pages of illustrations. The first 4 and last 24 pages contain a variety of advertisements: Devoe Artists' Materials, various art galleries, and framers, for example. There are many ms. annotations, in pencil, on the pages throughout commenting on the exhibit items. "$1.50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the first page. The front cover bears a reproduction of a woodcut by Rockwell Kent above the title. The insides of the front and back covers, as well as the back cover, contain advertisements.

Introductory Lessons in Drawing and Painting in Water-Colors

One art instruction book entitled Introductory Lessons in Drawing and Painting in Water-Colors, by Marion Kemble, published by S.W. Tilton & Company, Boston, copyright 1882. Following a preface and an introduction, the book is informally divided into 4 sections, the first of which is entitled "Perspective". The remaining sections are: "Water colors," "Directions for coloring". The book is 66 pages in length, with an additional 13 unnumbered pages of testimonials and advertisements at the end. Two pages of publisher's advertisements for "Self-Instructive Lessons in drawing and painting in water-colors" precede the title page. Each section within the book is illustrated with line drawings; the section entitled "Directions for coloring" contains 7 full-page illustrations. Of these, 6 are numbered and are accompanied by textual instruction for painting. The back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "Bulfinch's Mythology. The Age of Fable" edited by Rev. E.E. Hale. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. "H.N.[?] Gey.[?]" is written in ms. in ink, in the upper right-hand corner, "V.B. Cummings" is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the front cover.

Two invitations issued by the Boston University Art Department

Two invitations issued by the Boston University Art Department, one is for an art exhibition to be held May 29th to June 2 [1933]; the other for a demonstration "in the process of etching" to be held January 23 [1934?]. Neither invitation is dated with the year; the mailing envelope that accompanies these two invitations is postmarked May 25, 1933. The envelope is addressed, in ms., to "Miss Mabel Spofford, The High School, Gloucester, Massachusetts." Both invitations are folded cards, with original engraved illustrations on the front. The dimensions provided are for the larger of the two invitations. Title supplied by cataloger.
