Retrospective Exhibition of American Art, 1689-1921

Description: One catalog entitled Retrospective Exhibition of American Art, under the direction of Mrs. Albert Sterner Inaugurating the Junior Art Patrons of America. At the bottom of the title page is printed: "May 7 to 21, 1921 Fine Arts Building, 215 West Fifty-Seventh Street, May 6th to May 21st." The catalog is 64 unnumbered pages in length, and contains a listing of the items in the exhibit, and several pages of illustrations. The first 4 and last 24 pages contain a variety of advertisements: Devoe Artists' Materials, various art galleries, and framers, for example. There are many ms. annotations, in pencil, on the pages throughout commenting on the exhibit items. "$1.50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the first page. The front cover bears a reproduction of a woodcut by Rockwell Kent above the title. The insides of the front and back covers, as well as the back cover, contain advertisements.

The interior title reads: "The Rockport Art Association 30th Annual Exhibition." The catalog is 68 pages in length, and contains a listing of the items in the exhibition, as well as a sampling (reproductions) of some of the items exhibited. The images are black and white. The first few and last few pages of this catalog contain a variety of advertisements. The catalog is bound in a bright yellow paper cover with blue printing.

American Text Books of Art Education: Geometrical Drawing, Numbers One and Two

Two drawing books entitled American Text Books of Art Education: Geometrical Drawing, Numbers One and Two, by Walter Smith, published by L. Prang & Co., Boston, 1875. Each of the two books are 20 pages in length, and contain numbered problems and exercises. Each exercise consists of instructional text, a lithograph illustration, and space for copying. The exercises increase in difficulty and complexity through the course of each book, and within the series. The front covers are identical to each other, as are the insides of the front and back covers. The insides of the front covers contain "General Directions to Teacher and Pupil"; the insides of the back covers contain names, definitions and visual definitions of "geometric solids", as well as publisher's advertisements for other Smith materials. The back covers advertise Prang's "American Text-Books of Art Education, prepared by Prof. Walter Smith." The exercises in Book Number Two have been completed, in pencil.
