  Set of art appreciation posters created by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

  One set of art appreciation posters created by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1926. The set of 55 posters is housed within 5 large envelopes; there are 23 different posters, with duplicate copies of 9 of the 23. All of the posters contain black and white reproductions of photographs. Accompanying the posters within the first folder is a large piece of brown wrapping paper on which is written in ms.: "Mabel Spofford; from Boston Museum of Fine Arts, received April 7. 1956 art appreciation posters." The posters vary in size, but all are large. What follows is a listing of the contents of each envelope; the title at the top of the poster has been transcribed.   Application for Admission to the Boston University Summer Session in Physical Education at Sargent Camp, Peterborough, N.H

  Two pieces of ephemera relating to Boston University's Sargent Camp; the first is entitled Application for Admission to the Boston University Summer Session in Physical Education at Sargent Camp, Peterborough, N.H.; the other is entitled Room Reservation Form. The application form is dated 1948. Neither form has been completed. Accompanying the two forms is an envelope addressed, in typescript, to "Miss Gladys B. Tarr, 89 Prospect St., Sar15 Gloucester, Mass." The items were laid into a catalog entitled Summer Session in Physical Education at Sargent Camp, (HEH RB# 603429).

  Art Career School

  One flyer advertising Summer Classes at the Art Career School, New York, New York, 1949. This advertisement is for the 1949 summer session, June 20-August 26. Four separate classes are offered: Figure Drawing, Drawing and Painting, Applied Design or Illustration, and Outdoor Sketching. The sheet is folded into eighths within a blue paper folder, the first two pages of which are text and the latter six of which are (reproductions) illustrations, presumably artworks created in previous summer school classes. The cover title reads: "Art Career School." The item is accompanied by an unused mailing envelope with the school's name printed on it.

  New Art Education

  Nine books entitled New Art Education, published by Prang Company Publishers, "A Division of The American Crayon Company, Sandusky, Ohio", copyright 1944, 1945 and 1947. The books are numbered, 1-9; laid into each is a second book, an accompanying teacher guide, entitled Teachers Reference and Course of Study, published in 1947. (One book is intended for the teacher and one for the student.) Accompanying these nine sets are three teacher reference guides titled Teachers Reference and Course of Study. The first is labeled "A", "to accompany New Art Education Books I, II, III"; the second is labeled B, and the third C, to accompany Books 4, 5, 6 and 7, 8, 9 respectively. These books contain ideas, instructions and projects for a wide variety of arts and crafts projects for schoolchildren. All nine sets, and the Teachers Reference and Course of Study vols. A-C, are illustrated typically in black and white. Each of the nine New Art Education books and each of the Teachers Reference books have "Mabel Spofford" written in ms., in ink, on the front cover, and some on the title page. Laid into Book I of New Art Education are two TLSs on Stover School Art Service (of Birmingham, Michigan) letterhead, which are promotional and advertising solicitations for art projects and supplies. One letter is dated Jan. 18, 1933, the other Sept. 24, 1935; each is addressed to Miss Mabel Spofford , Supv. of Drawing, Gloucester, Mass. Within each letter are a few sample art projects for examination.

  Two publisher's advertisements for a book entitled An Introduction to Art Education by William G. Whitford, published by D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1929. The smaller of the two is a postcard-size advertisement, printed on both sides of the sheet. This piece contains an abstract of the book, and a listing of the contents and an order form on the other side. The book is advertised for $2.25. The second publisher's advertisement is 2 typescript pages (single-sided), on "Appleton Book Chat" letterhead. These two sheets contain a quotation/reprint of a book review of the same book from a December 1929 issue of Teacher's Chronicle, as well as several endorsement quotations from various art teachers.
