Three portfolios of samples from Germany which represent various forms of art with paper: paperweaving, sewing cards and paper-cutting and folding. The first set, in Env. 1, is entitled Flecht -u.-Ausuäh Schule; the second, in Env. 2, Versdur-u.-Buchzeichen Schule (Stringing and Bookmarking School); and the third, in Env. 3, Falt-u.-Ausscheide Schule (Folding and Cutouts School). The name "Louise Chur" is stamped at the bottom of the front cover of each of the three portfolios. The first portfolio contains 24 numbered (in ms.) samples of paper weaving, each labeled "Blott" and has "Louise Chur" written in ms., in ink, in the upper right-hand corner. Each sheet measures 5 3/4 in. W x 8 3/4 in. H ; 14.5 cm. W x 22.2 cm. H. The second portfolio contains a total of 23 samples of artwork; the first 11 of which are completed sewing cards; the next 2 are yarn tracings, and the last 10 are examples of paper weaving and folding. The sizes of the pieces vary. The third portfolio contains 20 examples of paper folding and paper cutouts, mounted onto cardstock. Much of the paper folding samples are reminiscent of origami. Each completed, mounted piece measures 8 in. W x 10 3/8 in. H ; 20.3 cm. W x 26.4 cm. H Title supplied by cataloger.

Set of art appreciation posters created by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

One set of art appreciation posters created by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1926. The set of 55 posters is housed within 5 large envelopes; there are 23 different posters, with duplicate copies of 9 of the 23. All of the posters contain black and white reproductions of photographs. Accompanying the posters within the first folder is a large piece of brown wrapping paper on which is written in ms.: "Mabel Spofford; from Boston Museum of Fine Arts, received April 7. 1956 art appreciation posters." The posters vary in size, but all are large. What follows is a listing of the contents of each envelope; the title at the top of the poster has been transcribed. Two sets of project instruction sheets

Two sets of project instruction sheets, one published by the Higgins (Company), and the other by the American Crayon Company of Sandusky, Ohio, ca. 1925. The first set is comprised of five one-sided sheets of textual instructions entitled "Paper Decorating With Higgins American Drawing Inks" (2 p.); "Materials for Higgins Museum Exhibit" (2 p.); and "Higgins Vegetable Glue" (1 p.) and a single sheet which bears a black and white reproduction of a photograph of a collage. The second set of sheets is a collection of "Problem and Idea Sheets", Nos. 41 :The Right Way of Making a Drawing" (3 p.); "No. 43 "The Right Technique for Water Colors and Tempera" (2 p.); "No. 46 How to Obtain a Good Color Scheme" (2 p.); "No. 52 How to Put 'Punch' in Your Art Work" (2 p.); and "No. 128 Making Jungle Animals" (1 p.). Each of the sheets are single-sided, and some are illustrated. These sets came from Mabel Spofford's personal collection. Title supplied by cataloger.

Eleven envelopes of materials relating to or about puppetry and marionettes, 1928 to 1940

A collection of eleven (11) envelopes of materials relating to or about puppetry and marionettes, ranging in date from 1928 to 1940, all collected or authored by Mabel Spofford. There are approximately 60 pieces within this box . Env. 1 contains 2 newspaper clippings about a marionette performance, circa 1930. Env. 2 contains 4 flyers from the New England Puppetry Institute, dated 1938. Env. 3 contains 2 flyers about marionettes and puppetry. Env. 4 contains 2 informational flyers regarding performances by the Fuller Studios (North Quincy, Massachusetts) and The Forrest Marionettes (Fitchburg, Massachusetts), circa 1940. Env. 5 contains 5 flyers, notices and newsletters from the Kingsland Marionettes of New York; some of the flyers are notices of their summer workshops in Brandon, Vermont. These items range in date from 1937 to 1940. Env. 6 contains 2 leaves (an article) removed from a 1937 issue of Look magazine about marionettes. Env. 7 contains 3 pieces. The first is an article from a magazine entitled "Marionettes in the Home" by Howard L. White. The second is 2 typescript pages of notes; the third is a color image, removed from a magazine, of 5 male faces. Env. 8 contains 6 pieces, which include typescript pages about stage plays and lighting of stage plays, a marionette performance invitation, a publisher's advertisement, and a program for the Twelfth Annual Conference of Supervisors and Teachers of Art at the Massachusetts School of Art, February 1935. Env. 9 contains 4 typescript pages and 1 envelope from the New England Puppetry Institute, sponsored by the Curry School of Expression. Env. 10 contains approximately 30 pieces of manuscript notes and newspaper clippings and printed items, including drawings and plans of puppets, all relating to various puppetry shows and performances. Env. 11 contains a 1933 exhibition catalog entitled Exhibition of Puppets and Marionettes with a note on Puppetry in America, by Paul McPharlin, held in Chicago from July-September 1933. It is 24 pages in length, and is illustrated. "Katharine Daniels, 1933" is written in ms., in ink, on the front cover. Title supplied by cataloger.

American Text Books of Art Education: Free-Hand Drawing, Numbers One-Six

Eight drawing books entitled American Text Books of Art Education: Free-Hand Drawing, Numbers One-Six, by Walter Smith, published by James R. Osgood & Company, Boston, and also by L. Prang & Company, Boston, 1873-1875. In this particular set there are duplicates of Numbers Two and Six. Numbers One, Two and both copies of Number 6 are published by James R. Osgood & Co.; Numbers Three, Four and Five are published by L. Prang & Company. These books range in length from 14 to 20 pages and contain numbered exercises, several per page. Each exercise consists of explanatory text, an image, and space for copying. The exercises progress in complexity within each book and within the series. Some of the books have been completed by students, others have not. All of the front covers are identical to each other. On the inside of the front cover of each drawing book are directions and instructions for use of the book. The insides of the back covers vary: some contain publisher's advertisements for other books by Walter Smith, others contain definitions of terms and advertisements for drawing models. The back covers also vary in content, but all are publisher's advertisements. Several of these books have additional ms. writing on their front covers: "Nellie B. Kimball" is written in the upper right-hand corner of Number One, and centered on Number Two; it also appears on Numbers Four, Five and Six (envs. 9, 10 and 11); "Lutie W. Tompkins" is written in the upper right-hand corner of the second copy of Number Two (env. 7); "Fred E. Howe" is written along the spine-side of the front cover of Number Three (env. 08); and "Curtis H. Foster" is written along the spine side of the front cover of Number 6 (env. 12).
