Three portfolios of paper art samples from Germany

Description
Three portfolios of samples from Germany which represent various forms of art with paper: paperweaving, sewing cards and paper-cutting and folding. The first set, in Env. 1, is entitled Flecht -u.-Ausuäh Schule; the second, in Env. 2, Versdur-u.-Buchzeichen Schule (Stringing and Bookmarking School); and the third, in Env. 3, Falt-u.-Ausscheide Schule (Folding and Cutouts School). The name "Louise Chur" is stamped at the bottom of the front cover of each of the three portfolios. The first portfolio contains 24 numbered (in ms.) samples of paper weaving, each labeled "Blott" and has "Louise Chur" written in ms., in ink, in the upper right-hand corner. Each sheet measures 5 3/4 in. W x 8 3/4 in. H ; 14.5 cm. W x 22.2 cm. H. The second portfolio contains a total of 23 samples of artwork; the first 11 of which are completed sewing cards; the next 2 are yarn tracings, and the last 10 are examples of paper weaving and folding. The sizes of the pieces vary. The third portfolio contains 20 examples of paper folding and paper cutouts, mounted onto cardstock. Much of the paper folding samples are reminiscent of origami. Each completed, mounted piece measures 8 in. W x 10 3/8 in. H ; 20.3 cm. W x 26.4 cm. H Title supplied by cataloger.

    A set of five (5) miscellaneous pieces of original artwork (probably) by Mabel Spofford, ca. 1947. Env. 1 is a pencil-on-tracing paper illustration of a view of the globe, with American Red Cross flags protruding from various countries. Below the image is the phrase "Your Red Cross It's For You Are You For It?" Measures 4 x 6 inches. Env. 2 is a pen and ink drawing of a barefoot hiker with his dog, and 3 angels above. The image is signed and dated "M.S. 2.5.47". Measures 7 1/4 in. W x 10 1/2 in. H. Env. 3 is a crayon and watercolor image of a wrapped bouquet of pink and yellow flowers. Measures 9 in. W x 12 in. H. Env. 4 is an unfinished sketch, in crayon and watercolor (perhaps watercolor crayons) of a flower. Measures 9 in. W x 12 in. H. Env. 5 is a crayon design. Measures 9 in. W x 12 in. H.

    One instructional book/catalog, entitled Art & Decoration in Crepe & Tissue Paper, published by Dennison Mfg. Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1895. This instructional catalog is 88 pages in length, and contains illustrated and textual instructions for creating lampshades, candle shades, flowers, doll dresses, picture frames and dinner napkins, as well as supplies needed for each project, with prices. Also included, mounted to p. 3, are tissue paper samples, with the company's full range of colors. The illustrated front cover features a lamp with an elaborate lampshade made from crepe paper; a dressing table "draped with Dennison's Imported Crepe Paper" is on the back cover. The inside front cover is a listing of the company's colored crepe paper in stock, and the last page and the inside of the back cover are manufacturer's advertisements for Dennison's Tissue Paper Outfits.

    Two envelopes of art reproductions ("proof sheets") of photographed examples of student art work. The "proof sheets" were mailed from James Parton Haney to Mabel Spofford; the brown paper mailing envelopes accompany each set of sheets. Env. 7 contains 18 "proof sheets"; these are photographic sheets, each containing reproduced art examples by art students. Included are images of signs, magazine covers, posters, advertisements, book covers, textiles and other items. Many of the individual art examples are signed by their creators, and most are dated 1919 or 1920. The "proof sheets" are in black and white. Env. 8 contains 12 "proof sheets" of art examples by art students. Each sheet contains several reproduced examples of work. Included are images of decorative and advertising posters for a variety of events, plays, and lectures. Most of the items are signed by their creators, and are dated 1921. The set of 55 posters is housed within 5 large envelopes; there are 23 different posters, with duplicate copies of 9 of the 23. All of the posters contain black and white reproductions of photographs. Accompanying the posters within the first folder is a large piece of brown wrapping paper on which is written in ms.: "Mabel Spofford; from Boston Museum of Fine Arts, received April 7. 1956 art appreciation posters." The posters vary in size, but all are large. What follows is a listing of the contents of each envelope; the title at the top of the poster has been transcribed.
