Description: One instructional book/catalog, entitled Art & Decoration in Crepe & Tissue Paper, published by Dennison Mfg. Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1895. This instructional catalog is 88 pages in length, and contains illustrated and textual instructions for creating lampshades, candle shades, flowers, doll dresses, picture frames and dinner napkins, as well as supplies needed for each project, with prices. Also included, mounted to p. 3, are tissue paper samples, with the company's full range of colors. The illustrated front cover features a lamp with an elaborate lampshade made from crepe paper; a dressing table "draped with Dennison's Imported Crepe Paper" is on the back cover. The inside front cover is a listing of the company's colored crepe paper in stock, and the last page and the inside of the back cover are manufacturer's advertisements for Dennison's Tissue Paper Outfits.

How to make Crepe Paper Flowers

One booklet entitled How to make Crepe Paper Flowers, published by Dennison Manufacturing Co., Framingham, Massachusetts, 1922. 32 pages in length, this instructional pamphlet provides both general and specific instructions for making numerous kinds of flowers from crepe paper. Each page highlights one kind of flower, and includes textual and visual (black and white) instructions. Laid in are several folded paper pattern sheets for use with the instructional pamphlet. The front and back covers are illustrated and in color; the front cover features a seated woman who is cutting a length of green crepe paper; the back cover features an orange vase of pink (presumably crepe paper) roses. Also on the front cover is the price of the pamphlet: "Price 10 [cents symbol]". The inside of the front cover is a manufacturer's advertisement for "Instrutions Books of 'Dennison Craft'", which lists and briefly describes the six titles in the series. The inside of the back cover advertises three books of holiday and party decorations issued by Dennison Manufacturing Co. "Mabel Spofford" is written in ms. at the top of the front cover.

One pamphlet/catalog, copyright 1927, entitled Creative Expression in Design, published by Milton Bradley Company, Springfield, Massachusetts. This pamphlet is 32 numbered pages in length, is illustrated with color reproductions of artwork, and includes two additional unnumbered plates of sample illustrations on colored paper. Roughly the first half of the booklet is informational and instructional, the second half serves as an illustrated catalog of a wide variety of artist's materials, including crayons, brushes, paper and paints. A color image of a woman wearing a headdress against a green background graces the front cover. "Cover design by Margaret Voight, a pupil of Polytechnic High School, San Francisco" is printed on the inside front cover. "Copyright, 1927, by Milton Bradley Company, Springfield, Mass." is also printed inside the front cover. The inside back cover and the back cover itself are blank. The text of the booklet emphasizes creativity in design, especially in relation to poster design. The original brown paper envelope accompanies the pamphlet.

Art in Dress with Notes on Home Decoration

One instructional book entitled Art in Dress with Notes on Home Decoration, second edition, by Lydia Bolmar and Kathleen McNutt, published by Manual Arts Press, Peoria, Illinois, copyright 1917. This 46-page book is "in fact, a textbook on art as applied to dress and home decoration . . . intended for the use of students in domestic art courses." (Introduction, p. 3) The chapters address such issues as basic principles of design and arrangement, dress and its relation to the wearer, color, and home decoration. The book is illustrated with black and white line drawings, and features three fold-out plates intended for practice of the principles outlined in the book. The title on the front cover is framed with a decorative border; the inside of the front cover and both sides of the back cover are blank. Pages 43-46 contain publisher's advertisements for books on related subjects. "Mabel Spofford" is written in ms. at the top of the front cover, as well as below the title on the title page. An embossed stamp of the letter "S" is on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. Laid in is the February 1916 issue (single sheet, double sided) of The Applied Arts Bulletin.

Industrial and Decorative Art in Public Schools

One pamphlet entitled Industrial and Decorative Art in Public Schools, by Charles G. Leland, published by Philadelphia Social Science Association, 1880. This pamphlet is 18 numbered pages in length and is not illustrated. As stated on the front cover, this paper was "Read at a meeting of the Association, October 21st, 1880." Leland suggests the ways in which the young should be educated so that they can do something to support themselves. Industrial and decorative art, he argues, not only produces a tangible product, it trains the mind. On the inside of the front cover is a "list of the papers read before the Association" between 1871 and 1880. The last page is blank.

American Text Books of Art Education: Intermediate Course, Numbers One and Three

Two drawing books entitled American Text Books of Art Education: Intermediate Course, Numbers One and Three, by Walter Smith, published by L. Prang & Company, Boston, 1875. Each book contains 20 numbered pages, and numbered exercises. Each exercise consists of very brief instructional text, an image, and space for copying. In Book One, many of the exercises focus on patterns, shapes and designs made from lines and shapes. Book Three focuses more on replication of forms, such as vases, drinking glasses and solids. Some of the exercises in the books have been completed by previous owners. The front covers of each bear the decorative symbol often used on the front covers of Smith instructional books. The inside front cover of Book One contains definitions of terms used throughout the book. The inside back cover gives general directions for the student and teacher, and lists the "principles of design illustrated" in the book. On the back cover is a descriptive outline of the Smith drawing course for the four levels of schools. The inside of the front cover of Book Three contains general use directions and illustrated definitions of "geometrical solids defined and described." On the inside of the back cover are: "Elementary principles to be taught and observed in model and object drawing: freehand." The back cover contains the same outline of the Smith system for the public schools as Book One. "Lutie Tompkins" is written in ms., in ink, along the top of the front cover of Book One. "McDonald" is written in ms., in ink, on the front cover of Book Three.

The Prang Elementary Course in Art Instruction, Eastern Edition

One drawing book entitled The Prang Elementary Course in Art Instruction, Eastern Edition, published by The Prang Educational Company, Boston, New York and Chicago, copyright 1899. The subtitle reads: Description, Specimen Illustrations from different grades and Opinions of leading Supervisors and Teachers. This 40-page book is primarily a collection of written testimonials about the Prang drawing system. Pages 3-6 are devoted to an outline and explanation of the system and its various levels and courses, and the remaining pages are excerpts from letters of praise from art teachers in the U.S., illustrated with both images from the Prang instructional drawing books and samples of artwork created using the Prang courses. The first two pages are composed of illustrations. The front cover is illustrated in the upper left-hand corner with a small, rectangular image of three daffodils. On the inside of the front cover begins "European Opinions in Regard to the Prang Course", which continues onto the inside back cover and the back cover. "2- BDF as is" (price) written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.
