A set of five (5) miscellaneous pieces of original artwork (probably) by Mabel Spofford, ca. 1947. Env. 1 is a pencil-on-tracing paper illustration of a view of the globe, with American Red Cross flags protruding from various countries. Below the image is the phrase "Your Red Cross It's For You Are You For It?" Measures 4 x 6 inches. Env. 2 is a pen and ink drawing of a barefoot hiker with his dog, and 3 angels above. The image is signed and dated "M.S. 2.5.47". Measures 7 1/4 in. W x 10 1/2 in. H. Env. 3 is a crayon and watercolor image of a wrapped bouquet of pink and yellow flowers. Measures 9 in. W x 12 in. H. Env. 4 is an unfinished sketch, in crayon and watercolor (perhaps watercolor crayons) of a flower. Measures 9 in. W x 12 in. H. Env. 5 is a crayon design. Measures 9 in. W x 12 in. H.

Three portfolios of paper art samples from Germany

Three portfolios of samples from Germany which represent various forms of art with paper: paperweaving, sewing cards and paper-cutting and folding. The first set, in Env. 1, is entitled Flecht -u.-Ausuäh Schule; the second, in Env. 2, Versdur-u.-Buchzeichen Schule (Stringing and Bookmarking School); and the third, in Env. 3, Falt-u.-Ausscheide Schule (Folding and Cutouts School). The name "Louise Chur" is stamped at the bottom of the front cover of each of the three portfolios. The first portfolio contains 24 numbered (in ms.) samples of paper weaving, each labeled "Blott" and has "Louise Chur" written in ms., in ink, in the upper right-hand corner. Each sheet measures 5 3/4 in. W x 8 3/4 in. H ; 14.5 cm. W x 22.2 cm. H. The second portfolio contains a total of 23 samples of artwork; the first 11 of which are completed sewing cards; the next 2 are yarn tracings, and the last 10 are examples of paper weaving and folding. The sizes of the pieces vary. The third portfolio contains 20 examples of paper folding and paper cutouts, mounted onto cardstock. Much of the paper folding samples are reminiscent of origami. Each completed, mounted piece measures 8 in. W x 10 3/8 in. H ; 20.3 cm. W x 26.4 cm. H Title supplied by cataloger.

The first 6 drawings (Env. 45-50) are charcoal drawings of geometric solids; the next 3 (Env. 51-53) are also charcoal drawings, the first two are of a statue face, the third of a bowl; the next 2 (Env. 55-56) are colored chalk drawings, and the last envelope (Env. 57) is a two-sided leaf of ms. notes, in pencil. Certificates of honour awarded for a drawing examination by The Royal Drawing Society

Two certificates of honour awarded for a drawing examination, issued by The Royal Drawing Society. Both cards were awarded to Irene Charlotte Chapman. Both cards are illustrated, and contain printed and ms. text. The award in Env. 7 reads: "This is to certify that Irene Charlotte Chapman (aged 9) a pupil at St. Joseph's School, Slough, obtained a Pass in Division Prepatory at the Drawing Examination held June 1914.", Signed by H.G. Montgomery, Chairman of Council, and T.R. Ablett, Art Director. The illustrated portion of the card is signed by E.W. Little. The award in Env. 8 reads: "This is to certify that Irene Charlotte Chapman (aged 13) a pupil at St. Joseph's S. Slough obtained Honours in Division Three at the Drawing Examination held June 1919." Signed by H.G. Montgomery, Chairman of Council, and T.R. Ablett, Art Director. The illustrated portion of this certificate is signed by Helen S. Kuck II. Drawing Book, For Copies

Two drawing books of original and copied drawings entitled Drawing Book, For Copies, one created by Carrie Cooley, the other by Mattie Cooley, manufactured by John Marsh, Manufacturing Stationer and Importer, Boston, ca. 1855. Each book is 12 unnumbered leaves in length and contains pencil drawings copied from other sources. Both books have illustrated front covers; a delicate and elaborate floral frame surrounds the title and a vignette of a steam engine train. The back covers are manufacturer's advertisements. The drawing book in Env. 42 is bound in green paper, and "Carrie Cooley" is written in ms., in pencil, on the front cover. The drawing book in Env. 43 is bound in beige paper, and "Mattie [?] Cooley" is written in ms., in pencil, on the front cover, as well as in ink in the upper right-hand corner. Tissue paper guard sheets are bound in between each of the leaves in both books.

American Text Books of Art Education: Free-Hand Drawing, Numbers One-Six

Eight drawing books entitled American Text Books of Art Education: Free-Hand Drawing, Numbers One-Six, by Walter Smith, published by James R. Osgood & Company, Boston, and also by L. Prang & Company, Boston, 1873-1875. In this particular set there are duplicates of Numbers Two and Six. Numbers One, Two and both copies of Number 6 are published by James R. Osgood & Co.; Numbers Three, Four and Five are published by L. Prang & Company. These books range in length from 14 to 20 pages and contain numbered exercises, several per page. Each exercise consists of explanatory text, an image, and space for copying. The exercises progress in complexity within each book and within the series. Some of the books have been completed by students, others have not. All of the front covers are identical to each other. On the inside of the front cover of each drawing book are directions and instructions for use of the book. The insides of the back covers vary: some contain publisher's advertisements for other books by Walter Smith, others contain definitions of terms and advertisements for drawing models. The back covers also vary in content, but all are publisher's advertisements. Several of these books have additional ms. writing on their front covers: "Nellie B. Kimball" is written in the upper right-hand corner of Number One, and centered on Number Two; it also appears on Numbers Four, Five and Six (envs. 9, 10 and 11); "Lutie W. Tompkins" is written in the upper right-hand corner of the second copy of Number Two (env. 7); "Fred E. Howe" is written along the spine-side of the front cover of Number Three (env. 08); and "Curtis H. Foster" is written along the spine side of the front cover of Number 6 (env. 12).
