The plan includes a starboard longitudinal cutaway of the vessel showing decks and holds, along with capacity; there are also drawings of parts of the Main, Boat, and Steerage decks, showing passenger accommodations and public spaces such as the First Class dining cabin. Hand drawn on vellum. "Pacific Mail S.S.Company's S.S. Indiana"--title at the top of the drawing. No scale given. "Nov. 11, 1907. 113-3203"--in ink, in ms., lower right corner. "113-3203"--stamped number, in brown ink, lower right corner. Plan was found rolled in the drawer; not seeking to fold it, the plan was re-rolled. The Indiana, built in 1872 for the American Line by Cramps, Philadelphia, was purchased in the fiscal year ending 30 April 1908 by Pacific Mail Steamship Company; the drawing may have been part of a survey done following the purchase of the vessel; the Indiana was lost on 3 April 1909 after wrecking on Tosco Point, near Magdalena Bay, Baja California. "Case No. 361S Sheet No. 7159S"--lower right corner, stamped on original; numbers, in ms.; stamp and the case number are the similar to the one found on ephKMSP 006, indicating the origin of the drawing is Union Iron Works Co., San Francisco. "E2"--in lower right corner of the image. Unknown as to when the copy was made. "City of Peking"--on verso, in ms., in pencil. The City of Peking, built in 1874, was the first iron-hulled, propeller-driven steamer built for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company; she was chartered in 1898 by US Government as a troopship for Spanish-American War and sailed as part of group led by USS Charleston; laid up at San Francisco in 1908, she was broken up in 1910. Stamp and the case number are similar as the one found on priJHK 00143, indicating the origin of the drawing is Union Iron Works Co., San Francisco. Focus of item: Acapulco (1873-1914) ; Colon (1873-1904).
