    Andersonville Prison : Georgia

    Visual Materials

    An uncolored view print of 33,000 Union soldiers imprisoned in Andersonville Prison, a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp. The foreground includes an image of Captain Henry Wirz, shown on horseback escorting a prisoner dressed in tattered clothes to the stockade. Inside the wooden fenced camp, prisoners are depicted in densely packed and cramped enclosures, shown either in acts of labor or carried out on stretchers. The prison is surrounded by armed guards, barren trees, and a forest in the background. The print is labeled with a number key identifying eight scenes; the key reads: "1. Upper Cook - house; 2. Barracks for the sick; 3. Fort of Six Guns; 4. Rebel Sutler's Tent; 5. Swamp within the prison; 6. Bake House; 7. Capt. Wirz taking a prisoner to the Stocks; 8. Meat Wagon." The title is printed in the lower center and reads, "Andersonville Prison: Georgia. Representing the imprisonment of 33,000 Union Soldiers during the months of June, July, and August 1864." Signed and dated by artist John B. Walker in lower left. Signed by lithographer T. Sinclair in lower right. Signed in stone by artist Anton Hohenstein in the image's lower right corner.     A black-and-white panoramic lithograph view of San Francisco, California. The print was drawn from a daguerreotype by photographer Eugène Delessert, printed by Parisian lithograph firm Imprimerie Lemercier, and published by M. [Michele] Knoedler. The print shows San Francisco's California St. with Yerba Buena Harbor and Island in the center, and Telegraph Hill and Alcatraz Island on the left. Scenery includes sailboats, building structures, horses, and figures in a variety of dress. Text below center of image reads, "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1855, by M. Knoedler, in the clerk's office of the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of New York." Printer signature reads "Imp. Lemercier, Paris" in lower right corner. Title is printed in the lower center in a cursive font.

    Air mail across the Pacific : San Francisco to Hong Kong

    A black-and-white print published by the San Francisco Post Office advertising its trans-Pacific airmail service. The title of the print is in English, with Chinese text on the lower half describing how airmail was shipped from San Francisco to Honolulu, Guam, Manila, Macao, and Hong Kong. Text in Chinese also lists the postage rates and total duration of the flights varying by destination. The center of the print features Clyde H. Sunderland's aerial photograph of Pan American Airway's "China Clipper" flying over San Francisco, California. The top and bottom of the print include borders decorated with monoplane motifs. The printed signature at the lower center reads, "San Francisco P.O. 9-30-37-500."

    A digital print on Classic Crest paper of a figure in Alison Saar's monument, the Salon, installed at the Charles Aznavour Garden in Paris, France, for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The print depicts the central figure of the sculptural installation, a Black woman seated and resting an olive branch on her lap with her left hand, while holding up an Olympic flame with her right hand. The image includes relief print markings and is printed in white, black, blue, and brown ink. The border below the image includes the edition number 225 of 350 on the lower left, the title "Salon" in the lower center, and is signed and dated by stamp "A. Saar 2024" in the lower right.

    A hand-colored lithograph view print depicting the capture of the Chinese Summer Palace near Peking, China. The image includes Chinese soldiers in varying military attire and queue braids while armed with swords, bows and arrows, dragon shields, and talismanic demon portraits. The French military is depicted in the center of the print dressed in blue uniforms with epaulettes, bayonets, and rifles on horseback while waving a flag with a French imperial eagle finial and flag. The right of the image depicts crowds of men in uniform fighting, and one of the men is illustrated in a red coat, likely referring to the British army. Background and foreground illustrate the Chinese soldiers as falling in defeat. The title is printed in French and English below the image. Signed by printer, "Lith: H Jannin, Paris" in the lower right corner. Signed by the publisher, "Paris chez Codoni, rue Grenier St. Lazare, 20," in the lower left corner. Signed by artist "Albert" in stone in the image's lower right corner.
