  Colonel John E. Parker photograph album of a family trip to California

  An album of photographs, postcards, pasted clippings, and ephemera documenting a family's automobile trip from Massachusetts to California in the winter of 1937-1938. John E. Parker, and presumably his wife, Laura, and her sister, and the Parker's teenage son, John Jr. (and their cat), are seen at various stops in California, identified by signs or landmarks, as there are no captions in the album. In Pasadena, they went to the Rose Parade on January 1, 1938 (program included in the album), and tried to get tickets to the Rose Bowl football game (returned check and letter in album). Other places visited in California include Hollywood, Palm Springs, Laguna Beach, Santa Anita Park Racetrack, and San Francisco. There are 73 souvenir photographic postcards and 96 photomechanical postcards with printed titles, of California, and also Arkansas, Texas, and Arizona. Notable are two photographs of an indigent man and his dog-drawn wagon. The back of the album has a cartoon sketch of the family in an overloaded car, heading home.

  Photograph album of China, Korea, and Japan

  A photograph album containing 263 photographs of China, Korea, and Japan, dating from the time of the Boxer Uprising in China to the Russo-Japanese War, 1901 to 1905. The photographs are primarily unique images, along with some commercial photographs and foldout panoramas, and many have handwritten captions. The album's inside cover is inscribed: "John Rory Macey / H.M.S. Blenheim / China Station / Vol. II / Jan 1st 1901 - July 18th, 1905"; Macey was a naval engineer in the British Admiralty and most likely took some of the photographs, particularly naval-related scenes, and images of British servicemen. Photographic subjects in China include navy ships in the port of Weihaiwei, street scenes in Peking (Beijing) and other cities, Chinese residents, monuments (including the Forbidden Palace under foreign occupation), palaces, gardens, and temples. A number of photographs focus on the aftermath of the Boxer Uprising, including ruined buildings. The second portion of the album depicts scenes in Korea during the Russo-Japanese War; these include Korean people in daily activities, street scenes, commercial images of Chemulpo, and the palace grounds in Seoul. The third portion of the album contains amateur and commercial photographs of Japan, including the port cities of Maizuru and Yokohama, Japanese residents, tea ceremonies, the hot spring resort of Tonosawa, and panoramic images of the Osaka Exhibition of 1903. At the back of the album are 17 large, hand-colored photographs of Japan, including images of landscapes, street vendors, and Japanese women in genre scenes.

  Photograph and scrapbook album of women's trip to Mexico

  A travel album of photographs, ephemera and typescript narrative, documenting a car trip taken by four Texas women to Mexico and back in August and September 1938. Typed diary pages are pasted on several album pages detailing the people and places the women encountered and the experiences they had. The photographs include snapshots of residents, towns and villages, ancient temples, churches and convents, with some images of the four women who are only identified as Elizabeth, Juanita, "Sister," and M.S. They are seen with their guide, "Mr. Castillo," on a riverboat in Xochimilco in Mexico City, and also traveling by car in the mountains and countryside. Comments in the narrative discuss the use of travel conveniences such as Western Union and Wells Fargo, having to speak Spanish, the activities of indigenous peoples, and scenic wonders. The album is bound in wooden covers and has a carved illustration depicting a rural Mexican scene, most likely purchased on the trip. Also included in the album are photographic postcards, menus, brochures, and other ephemera collected from the trip.

  Photograph album of unidentified family, house and garden, possibly in Southern California

  A family photograph album of 23 mounted albumen prints of a house and large garden with statuary, potted palms, and planting beds decorated with conch shells. The house sits on a tree-lined road, and there are three interior photographs of rooms with Victorian furnishings and decor. There is a portrait of a well-dressed man, and another with four young men and women, presumably his family. The women are posed with a little girl in another photograph, and there is a group portrait of 10 people on a lawn tennis court, holding rackets. Some photographs in the garden focus on specific plants, particularly palms, and there are some scenic views of a canyon and stream. There are no identifications in the album, and the album's compiler and photographer are unknown.

  Historical Society of Southern California Collection - Henry Family photograph album

  The album, one of three depicting the Henry Family of Los Angeles, California, contains 403 snapshots, presumably compiled by Alexander Ellwood Henry (1890-1979) and primarily consisting of group portraits of the Henry family and unidentified individuals between 1907 and 1916. The photographs reflect trips and outings to a variety of locations in California (Santa Catalina Island, Pasadena, Venice, Los Angeles, Big Bear, Yosemite, San Francisco), as well as Niagara Falls, Canada, Europe, and Japan. There are many images of Henry and his friends as teenagers and young adults. Among the images are photographs of Henry's brother Thomas Cecil Henry (died 1910) as a student at Stanford around 1908-1910, the Henry home at 1400 S. Manhattan Place in Los Angeles, and individuals at the beach.

  Photograph album of motor sports in Southern California

  Visual Materials

  A photograph album of people with their motorcycles and automobiles, on outdoor excursions in Southern California in the early-20th century. Most images have writing on the back and feature a group of two men and two women named Eleanor, Hazel, Otto, and Russell (surnames unknown). In one photograph, they stand next to their motorcycles, wearing goggles, with pennants reading: "1915 San Francisco," "Riverside," and "Redlands," presumably in the midst of a road trip. Otto is also seen standing in front of a "New Era Motor Cycle" store in Redlands, California, and pushing his motorcycle with a spare tire strapped to the front. Other images include riders in an automobile in Tijuana, Mexico, 1915; visiting Big Bear Lake and dam; and a caravan of automobiles driving up a mountain road. Three photographs at Lake Arrowhead feature an Essex Motor Company automobile painted with advertising reading: "The N-Durance Essex, driven by Charles H. Holdson," 1923.
