  Photograph and scrapbook album of women's trip to Mexico

  A travel album of photographs, ephemera and typescript narrative, documenting a car trip taken by four Texas women to Mexico and back in August and September 1938. Typed diary pages are pasted on several album pages detailing the people and places the women encountered and the experiences they had. The photographs include snapshots of residents, towns and villages, ancient temples, churches and convents, with some images of the four women who are only identified as Elizabeth, Juanita, "Sister," and M.S. They are seen with their guide, "Mr. Castillo," on a riverboat in Xochimilco in Mexico City, and also traveling by car in the mountains and countryside. Comments in the narrative discuss the use of travel conveniences such as Western Union and Wells Fargo, having to speak Spanish, the activities of indigenous peoples, and scenic wonders. The album is bound in wooden covers and has a carved illustration depicting a rural Mexican scene, most likely purchased on the trip. Also included in the album are photographic postcards, menus, brochures, and other ephemera collected from the trip.

  An album with 117 photographs and 129 postcards chronicling an unidentified family's trip to the American West starting from Chicago, Illinois, on July 19, 1917. The images are chiefly snapshots and color lithographic postcards.The images follow the family's progress from Illinois to Missouri, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Canada, and Alaska. Includes photographs of the family on the steps in from of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; postcards of Kansas City, Missouri; photographs and postcards of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Grand Canyon, Arizona; California, particularly Santa Catalina Island, Coronado Beach, San Diego, Riverside (especially the Mission Inn), Long Beach, Santa Barbara, the Yosemite Valley, and San Francisco; Oregon, including Portland, the Columbia River, and Bayocean; Seattle, Washington; Canada, including Victoria, Vancouver, Alert Bay, and Prince Rupert, in British Columbia; a train ride on the Canadian Northern Pacific Railway through the Rockies; Lake Louise, Banff, and Alberta, in the province of Alberta; Alaska, including totem poles, Wrangell, Taku Glacier, Juneau, and Skagway. There are several photographs of the family's modes of transportation, including automobiles, steamboats (especially the "Princess Alice"), and trains. The postcards are issued by Fred Harvey, Frank H. Nowell, Louis H. Pederson (L.H.P.), Cross & Dimmitt, George Weister, and Fred Button.

  Colonel Charles Cotesworth Thomas family album with scenes of Southern California

  A family album with 53 photographs showing the family of mining superintendent Colonel Charles Cotesworth Thomas and his wife, Mary Sue Thomas, in Southern California. The images, chiefly cyanotypes, show the family camping, swimming, fishing, hunting, sailing, and in humorous poses primarily on Santa Catalina Island. The album pages have been decorated with hand-drawn black ink illustrations that fit the subject of the photographs. These elements may be the work of artist Annie Loring Bancroft, daughter or stepdaughter of Col. Thomas. Identified family members include the Thomas children: Francis J. Thomas, Chester Thomas, and Bancroft. Pasted at the back of the album are larger prints of the Redondo Hotel in Redondo Beach; two images of a young child with kittens captioned "Flash light" presumably taken with flash photography; a group portrait of Bancroft with friends on the lawn in front of the "Casa Figueroa" house at the corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Figueroa Street; an elevated view of Santa Monica Canyon showing Grimminger's Pavilion; and two photographs taken in Japan, one at a tomb in Nikko.

  Kawakami family photograph album

  Visual Materials

  A photograph album depicting a Japanese American family in California in the pre-internment period, along with portraits of Japanese family members. There isn't any writing in the album, but one photograph is inscribed "To Mr. S. Kawakami," who may be the compiler. The album begins with formal portraits of family groups in traditional Japanese dress that were most likely taken in Japan. A photograph of a young child laid into the album has Japanese printing on it, and there are a few pressed flowers in the album. Other images show Japanese Americans in California, including the University of California, Berkeley campus; a large group in front of the Berkeley Buddhist Temple on Channing Way, Berkeley; Ocean Park Pier in Santa Monica; downtown Los Angeles; Santa Barbara Mission; and San Francisco. Three images depict a sumo wrestling match that may have taken place in California.

  Photograph album of automobile road trips in Owens Valley, California

  A photograph album of group automobile trips chiefly through the Owens Valley, California area in 1932, including visits to the towns of Lone Pine, Panamint City, and Independence; hiking in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains; rifle shooting; and drives to mines and mining camps. Several images depict the filming of the Western movie "Flaming Guns" (1932) around Lone Pine, showing the film crew and actor Tom Mix. The unknown photographer may have been working at the Natural Soda Products Company plant, which was situated on the dry lakebed of Owens Lake near Keeler, as there are several images of the mineral plant, the Keeler swimming pool, and a small bedroom captioned "my room at N.S.P. Co." Other images show an Easter service in Keeler, the Cerro Gordo Mine, Estelle Mine, Onion Valley, and in Nevada, the towns of Lida and Goldfield. There are also travel scenes with friends and family in Southern California, including Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes peninsula, and crowds at a Christian Endeavor convention in Whittier.
