  Two albums with 96 photographs of family portraits and scenes taken in Illinois, Maine, Nebraska, California, and New Mexico. The first volume contains images of domestic life and residential streets in Evanston, Illinois, in 1887-1888; a family vacation to Searsmont and Appleton, Maine, in the summer of 1889; and life in Schuyler, Nebraska, in 1890. The second album begins with a family trip through New Mexico and California from February to March 1890, then turns to scenes of domestic life and street scenes in Omaha, Nebraska, from 1890 to 1893. Among the locations are Santa Fe, New Mexico; Colton, California; Alhambra, California; Santa Barbara, California; San Francisco, California; Collinsville, California; and Council Bluffs, Iowa. While most of the photographs are arranged chronologically, the end of second volume contains some additional family photographs from 1888-1890. Both volumes contain a number of informal family portraits, with many taken outdoors. Notable images include interior views of the family's parlor and dining room, with family members seated for a meal, laundry drying outdoors, the interior of the Schuyler National Bank, a maypole, a President's Day celebration in 1891, and the display of silver wedding gifts. The two group portraits from Collinsville, California, include a Chinese man dressed in traditional clothing. One photograph in the second album created with flash photography is labeled "First Flash Light Picture ; New Years Eve Dec. 21, 1891", and there is also a self-portrait of the family photographer with a camera.

  Thomas Family Photograph Album

  Visual Materials

  A personal photograph album of 104 images with handwritten captions chiefly depicting Chester A. Thomas (1874-1920) and Thomas family members between 1892 and 1898 in mining camps in Nevada (pages 1-29); at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California (pages 30-33); visiting Harvard University and Cambridge, Massachusetts (pages 38-49); and at Camp Merritt at the Presidio, San Francisco, in 1898 (pages 33-37 and 50-65). The album includes 20 cyanotype photographs (12.5 x 16.5 cm) of the mining camps in Virginia City and Sutro, Nevada (where Thomas's father, Charles Thomas, was superintendent of the Sutro tunnel), including: mining equipment, miners, locomotive cars, interior views of the mine shaft, buildings and mules. Some of the images are of Camp Merritt, at the Presidio in San Francisco, California, where California volunteers assembled in May-June 1898 for transport to the Philippines during the Spanish American War. Thomas, a member of Company K of the United States Cavalry Volunteers, is depicted as well as other soldiers, including members of the 51st Iowa Volunteers.

  Colonel John E. Parker photograph album of a family trip to California

  Visual Materials

  An album of photographs, postcards, pasted clippings, and ephemera documenting a family's automobile trip from Massachusetts to California in the winter of 1937-1938. John E. Parker, and presumably his wife, Laura, and her sister, and the Parker's teenage son, John Jr. (and their cat), are seen at various stops in California, identified by signs or landmarks, as there are no captions in the album. In Pasadena, they went to the Rose Parade on January 1, 1938 (program included in the album), and tried to get tickets to the Rose Bowl football game (returned check and letter in album). Other places visited in California include Hollywood, Palm Springs, Laguna Beach, Santa Anita Park Racetrack, and San Francisco. There are 73 souvenir photographic postcards and 96 photomechanical postcards with printed titles, of California, and also Arkansas, Texas, and Arizona. Notable are two photographs of an indigent man and his dog-drawn wagon. The back of the album has a cartoon sketch of the family in an overloaded car, heading home.

  The album is a published collection of souvenir views of Los Angeles, California, and vicinity. Included are views of Figueroa Street; Hollenbeck Home; Adams Street; West Lake Park; Palm Drive; Plaza Church; Broadway and the "old" City Hall; the "old" Court house; Chester Place; a panorama of central Los Angeles; San Gabriel Mission; Marengo Avenue in Pasadena; the Raymond Hotel; the Mount Lowe cable incline railway; the home of Ramona (Rancho Camulos in Ventura County); Avalon harbor and Santa Catalina Island; the Potter Hotel in Santa Barbara; the Santa Barbara Mission; Redlands; the Hotel Coronado in San Diego; and Magnolia Avenue in Riverside.

  Photograph album of unidentified family, house and garden, possibly in Southern California

  Visual Materials

  A family photograph album of 23 mounted albumen prints of a house and large garden with statuary, potted palms, and planting beds decorated with conch shells. The house sits on a tree-lined road, and there are three interior photographs of rooms with Victorian furnishings and decor. There is a portrait of a well-dressed man, and another with four young men and women, presumably his family. The women are posed with a little girl in another photograph, and there is a group portrait of 10 people on a lawn tennis court, holding rackets. Some photographs in the garden focus on specific plants, particularly palms, and there are some scenic views of a canyon and stream. There are no identifications in the album, and the album's compiler and photographer are unknown.

  Historical Society of Southern California Collection - Henry Family photograph album

  Visual Materials

  The album, one of three depicting the Henry Family of Los Angeles, California, contains 403 snapshots, presumably compiled by Alexander Ellwood Henry (1890-1979) and primarily consisting of group portraits of the Henry family and unidentified individuals between 1907 and 1916. The photographs reflect trips and outings to a variety of locations in California (Santa Catalina Island, Pasadena, Venice, Los Angeles, Big Bear, Yosemite, San Francisco), as well as Niagara Falls, Canada, Europe, and Japan. There are many images of Henry and his friends as teenagers and young adults. Among the images are photographs of Henry's brother Thomas Cecil Henry (died 1910) as a student at Stanford around 1908-1910, the Henry home at 1400 S. Manhattan Place in Los Angeles, and individuals at the beach.
