Pretty Pets Paint Box

One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled Pretty Pets Paint Box, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1895. The set is comprised of 28 cakes of watercolor paint, two small porcelain dishes, one paintbrush, a piece of glass, and a 5-inch paper ruler. The cakes of paint are embossed with an artist's palette design, and are contained within wooden dividers in a wooden box (no lid). This box is housed within a paperboard box (which does have a lid). Mounted onto the paperboard lid is a chromolithograph image of three girls, each painting a toy elephant. "2.00" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the image on the lid.

Colouring and Sketching with Metal Stencils

One boxed set of metal stencils entitled Colouring and Sketching with Metal Stencils, manufactured by W & S B., ca. 1890. The set is comprised of six tin stencils, four colored pencils, one Gillette razor blade (only its wrapper remains) and 5 blank postcards. The stencils were to be used on the postcards; only one postcard has been drawn upon. The set is housed within a paperboard box, which has a paper label mounted to the top lid. The label is illustrated in color with an image of three children playing. "W & S B" and "No. 1241" are printed in the lower left and right-hand corners, respectively, of the lid. "Made in Germany" is printed on the label also. The tin stencils include images of a ship, a train, a windmill and a house.

A.W. Faber's Polygrade Lead Pencils

One pencil box for A.W. Faber's Polygrade Lead Pencils, ca. 1850. The box contains 5 slots for 5 different grades of pencils; the slots are labeled, and there is a hardness guide printed on a paper label affixed to the underside of the lid. The guide is printed in both French and English. The entire contents of the lid read: "Prize-Medals, London 1851 New York 1853 paris 1855 etc., A.W. Faber's Polygrade-Lead-Pencils Manufacion y established 1761." The label is decorated and embossed, in gold, into the lid. The box is empty.

One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled The Wonderful Paint Box for Little Artists, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1930. The set is comprised of 9 small, rectangular cakes of watercolor paint, 2 very small stone dishes, a color portrait of a lady, and a piece of glass the same size. Each of the cakes of paint are embossed with an image of a crown. The set is housed within a paperboard box. The lid is illustrated with a color image of a rectangular wooden palette, the title, and spots of color.

One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled For A Good Child, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1925? The set is comprised of 21 small, rectangular embossed cakes of watercolor paint, a small, round porcelain dish, and a fragment of a quill brush. The set is housed within a wooden box with a sliding lid. The set's title is printed on a paper label that is affixed to the bottom of the box, just above the first row of paints. An image printed on paper is affixed to the lid; the image is of two children playing, and is signed "Dagood"(?). Each of the cakes of paint is embossed with an image of a swan. The image on the lid is mounted upside down. Laid into the box is one folded sheet of brown blotting paper.

One set of wood blocks entitled Bradley's Kindergarten Material, No. 4, Fourth Gift, manufactured by Milton Bradley & Co., Springfield, Massachusetts, ca. 1900. The set is comprised of 8 wooden 1-inch cube blocks, housed inside a wooden box with a sliding lid. A paper label is mounted to the front side of the box; the label bears the title and manufacturer's name. The cubes were used as models for drawing, and were also used in counting and auditory exercises.
