One painting book entitled Flower Studies: A Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1902. The front cover features poppies bordered by other flowers. On the back cover in the lower right-hand corner appears the company's trademark and "No. 84 1/2." The title page is entitled Object Painting Book. The inside front cover depicts a mock palette of colors--red, green, yellow, blue and purple--which were meant to be used with the book, as explained in the instructions printed on the inside of the back cover. Six color images, including the cover and title page, are represented. Four of these within the book mirror four identical images printed only in outline. None of the outlined images have been filled in. On the upper edge of the title page, in pen, is the name "Catherine P. Stafford" and below that, in pencil, "$4.50". On the back inside cover, also in pen, is the same name--"Catherine P. Stafford".

The Easy to Paint Book

One painting book, copyright 1932, entitled The Easy to Paint Book, by Helen Schwarz, published by Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin. This book is comprised of 48 unnumbered pages of colored and black and white illustrations for painting. The front cover features an orange, white and black illustration of three children looking at a painting book. The same image appears on the back cover along with the title "The Painting Book." Printed on the inside of the front cover are "Instructions for Painting Book"; the last of which is "NEVER put your brush in your mouth." Printed at the bottom of the inside front cover: "W684. Copyright 1932 Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin, Printed in U.S.A." Throughout the book, illustrations appear as pairs of colored and uncolored images. Many have been filled in with watercolor.

The Lone Ranger Paint Book

One painting book, copyright 1938, entitled The Lone Ranger Paint Book: with Silver and Tonto, illustrated by Ted Horn, published by Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin. This book is 32 unnumbered pages in length, and is comprised of labeled outline illustrations, each of which is signed "Ted." The front cover is a color image of the Lone Ranger on his horse, against a yellow background. "Hi-Yo Silver!" is printed above the title. "621" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. The back cover is a duplicate of the front. The title page is illustrated with a front view of Silver's head. "Copyright 1938, by The Lone Ranger, Inc." is printed below the publisher's statement at the bottom of the title page. The outline images are captioned, such as: "The Lone Ranger and Silver"; "Tonto Senses Danger"; and "The Sheriff Surveys the Scene". Some of the images have been colored with crayon.

How to make Crepe Paper Flowers

One booklet entitled How to make Crepe Paper Flowers, published by Dennison Manufacturing Co., Framingham, Massachusetts, 1922. 32 pages in length, this instructional pamphlet provides both general and specific instructions for making numerous kinds of flowers from crepe paper. Each page highlights one kind of flower, and includes textual and visual (black and white) instructions. Laid in are several folded paper pattern sheets for use with the instructional pamphlet. The front and back covers are illustrated and in color; the front cover features a seated woman who is cutting a length of green crepe paper; the back cover features an orange vase of pink (presumably crepe paper) roses. Also on the front cover is the price of the pamphlet: "Price 10 [cents symbol]". The inside of the front cover is a manufacturer's advertisement for "Instrutions Books of 'Dennison Craft'", which lists and briefly describes the six titles in the series. The inside of the back cover advertises three books of holiday and party decorations issued by Dennison Manufacturing Co. "Mabel Spofford" is written in ms. at the top of the front cover.

One Japanese pattern book, circa 1898. The book is labeled (or titled) in Japanese on the cover; it contains approximately 200 pages in length, and is comprised of labeled (in Japanese) nature scenes, including those of waterfalls, birds, flowers and trees. "Compliments of Arthur W. Dow, 1898", is written, in ms., in ink, at the top of the first page. The item is bound in orange paper overlaying thick paper. Title supplied by cataloger.

One drawing/painting book, ca. 1905, entitled Little Folks' Painting and Drawing Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York. This book is 32 unnumbered pages in length and is comprised of chromolithograph and black and white lithographs in outline form for coloring. The front cover features an image of two children wrapping a gift box. "0701, McLoughlin Bros. N.Y." is printed in the lower left-hand corner beneath the image. The back cover is not illustrated, but the paper is decorated in a simple pattern. "Directions" are printed on the front pastedown, and the title page is illustrated with a black and white image of a boy painting a fence. All of the illustrations are of animals; some have been colored. A ms. inscription in ink is on the title page. "2.-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the title page.
