Betty's Painting Book

One painting book entitled Betty's Painting Book, published by Stecher Lith. Co., Rochester, New York, 1917. This book is composed of 12 unnumbered pages of chromolithograph and outline illustrations, the latter meant for painting. The front cover is a vivid chromolithograph of a seated girl, painting in watercolor. The words "Instructive, Entertaining" are printed at the top of the cover, one word in each corner. "No. 38" is printed in the lower right-hand corner, and the cover illustration is signed "Maynard Evans Price". The back cover is the same image, in reverse. The title of the book is repeated at the top of the inside front cover; beneath it is a 6-stanza rhyme which provides instructions for using the book. On the inside of the back cover is the last outline image for coloring. Each page contains a child or pair of children from different countries; some pages contain just an outline image, others contain both a chromolithograph image and an outline image. Each is accompanied by a brief rhyme; for example: "This English mite is shy tho bright, And always kind to pets you'll find." None of the images have been colored.

Landscape Painting Book

One painting book entitled Landscape Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1902. The front cover shows a winter landscape. The title page features a different title (Object Painting Book) than that found on the front cover. The inside front cover reads "a few practical directions for young painters," including how to mix paints. The back inside cover depicts a palette of red, green, yellow, blue and purple; matching paint has been applied to each color by the student. The book contains 8 pages of images, half of which are printed in color, the other half in outline. The outlined images were filled in using the complementary color image as a guide. All of the outlined images have been filled in with watercolors. In the upper-right hand corner of the title page, in pencil, is written "1.00".

The Soldier Painting Book

One painting book entitled The Soldier Painting Book, published by Stecher Lith. Co., Rochester, New York, 1917. This book is comprised of 12 pages of chromolithograph and outline drawings of soldiers and medals of honor from various countries. On the inside of the back cover credits are given: "Pictures by W.F. Stacher, Verses by Carolyn S. Hodgman." The front cover is a chromolithograph image of two United States soldiers, labeled "U.S.A. Marine" and "U.S.A. Infantry." One is holding an American flag, the other a rifle. "No. 43" is printed in the lower right-hand corner. The back cover, too, is a chromolithograph; this image is of a naval battle scene within a decorative border, centered on the page. The title is repeated on the inside of the front cover; instructions are given in verse. "Made in USA" and "Copyright, 1917 by Stecher Lith. Co., Rochester, N.Y." are printed at the bottom of the inside front cover. Each page of the painting book contains an image or images of military men from various countries and their medals of honor. Some pages feature a single chromolithograph, others an outline image, while still others contain both. Some of the images have been colored with watercolor or crayon.

Flower Studies: A Painting Book

One painting book entitled Flower Studies: A Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1902. The front cover features poppies bordered by other flowers. On the back cover in the lower right-hand corner appears the company's trademark and "No. 84 1/2." The title page is entitled Object Painting Book. The inside front cover depicts a mock palette of colors--red, green, yellow, blue and purple--which were meant to be used with the book, as explained in the instructions printed on the inside of the back cover. Six color images, including the cover and title page, are represented. Four of these within the book mirror four identical images printed only in outline. None of the outlined images have been filled in. On the upper edge of the title page, in pen, is the name "Catherine P. Stafford" and below that, in pencil, "$4.50". On the back inside cover, also in pen, is the same name--"Catherine P. Stafford".

The Young Artist's Painting and Drawing Book

One drawing/painting book, ca. 1915, entitled The Young Artist's Painting and Drawing Book, by F. I. Wetherbee, published by M. A. Donohue & Co., Chicago. This book is comprised of 44 unnumbered pages of chromolithograph and outline illustrations for painting. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a seated child who is painting at an easel. "M.A. Donohue & Co., Chicago" is printed in the lower left-hand corner. The back cover illustration is of a girl on a low seat reading a book. "Directions for the Little Artist" are printed on the front pastedown, opposite the title page. A few descriptive lines are printed below the title: "Being a collection of the most artistic color schemes ever produced in an instructive painting book, teaching accuracy, harmony, beauty and color with pencil, paint and brush. Complete instructions for the little artist." Most, but not all, of the images appear in pairs, one colored and the other in outline form, for coloring. Some of the illustrations have been colored.

Kiddie Paint Book

One painting book entitled Kiddie Paint Book, published by Charles E. Graham & Co., New York, ca. 1918. The image on the front cover shows a young boy in a World War I army uniform, and below the title is the series title "0901 Kute Paint Book Series." The back cover features two cats, dressed as humans, in a living room scene--the male is wearing a green coat with tails. The company's trademark and "Made in the U.S.A." are in the lower right-hand corner. The book has 9 unique images, most in outline--only three were printed in color. Most images depict anthropomorphised and comical animals. One of the images, a squirrel driving a car, has been filled in using watercolors. In the upper left-hand corner of the front inside cover, in pencil, is written "5.50".
