One painting book entitled Landscape Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1902. The front cover shows a winter landscape. The title page features a different title (Object Painting Book) than that found on the front cover. The inside front cover reads "a few practical directions for young painters," including how to mix paints. The back inside cover depicts a palette of red, green, yellow, blue and purple; matching paint has been applied to each color by the student. The book contains 8 pages of images, half of which are printed in color, the other half in outline. The outlined images were filled in using the complementary color image as a guide. All of the outlined images have been filled in with watercolors. In the upper-right hand corner of the title page, in pencil, is written "1.00".

One painting book entitled The Easy Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1904. The front cover shows a rooster standing on a path. The lower right-hand corner of the back cover bears the company's trademark and "No. 83." The inside front cover features six colored circles--yellow, red, blue, orange, green, and purple-- which are identified as Primary Colors and Secondary Colors. These colors were meant as a guide for coloring in the book's images and, as explained in the instructions printed on the inside of the back cover, they are the actual pigments to be used (with water) to apply color within the book itself. Six color images, including the cover and title page, are included. Four colored images are matched by four identical images printed only in outline, which have not been filled in. The images mainly depict children at play. Across the top of the inside cover, in pencil, has been written "These are the actual pigments--see inside back cover" and "6099/5".

On the back cover in the lower right-hand corner is the company's trademark and "No. 84." The Soldier Painting Book

One painting book entitled The Soldier Painting Book, published by Stecher Lith. Co., Rochester, New York, 1917. This book is comprised of 12 pages of chromolithograph and outline drawings of soldiers and medals of honor from various countries. On the inside of the back cover credits are given: "Pictures by W.F. Stacher, Verses by Carolyn S. Hodgman." The front cover is a chromolithograph image of two United States soldiers, labeled "U.S.A. Marine" and "U.S.A. Infantry." One is holding an American flag, the other a rifle. "No. 43" is printed in the lower right-hand corner. The back cover, too, is a chromolithograph; this image is of a naval battle scene within a decorative border, centered on the page. The title is repeated on the inside of the front cover; instructions are given in verse. "Made in USA" and "Copyright, 1917 by Stecher Lith. Co., Rochester, N.Y." are printed at the bottom of the inside front cover. Each page of the painting book contains an image or images of military men from various countries and their medals of honor. Some pages feature a single chromolithograph, others an outline image, while still others contain both. Some of the images have been colored with watercolor or crayon.

One painting book, copyright 1932, entitled The Easy to Paint Book, by Helen Schwarz, published by Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin. This book is comprised of 48 unnumbered pages of colored and black and white illustrations for painting. The front cover features an orange, white and black illustration of three children looking at a painting book. The same image appears on the back cover along with the title "The Painting Book." Printed on the inside of the front cover are "Instructions for Painting Book"; the last of which is "NEVER put your brush in your mouth." Printed at the bottom of the inside front cover: "W684. Copyright 1932 Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin, Printed in U.S.A." Throughout the book, illustrations appear as pairs of colored and uncolored images. Many have been filled in with watercolor.

The Little Folks Painting Book

One painting book entitled The Little Folks Painting Book, by Kate Greenaway, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, ca. 1910. This book is comprised of 15 plates of black and white images of children meant for coloring; many of these have been colored in. Each page contains four labeled images, one in each of the four quadrants of a page. The front cover is a chromolithograph of several children, one of whom is painting at an easel. The back cover is an illustrated publisher's advertisement for "Pantomime Toy Books." The inside of the front cover contains text in three parts: "The Little Folks Painting Book"; "A Few Practical Directions", and "Instructions for Mixing the Colors." The inside of the back cover contains publisher's advertisements.
