    A full-length seated studio portrait of a young African American boy identified only as "Noah". Noah is sitting on a richly upholstered chair, leaning his left elbow on a cloth-draped table. He is wearing a white, partially open shirt, pants that have patches sewn on, a waist length cape with a hood, and no shoes. His left hand is resting against his cheek, and his right hand is holding the bowl of a long pipe, the stem of which is in between his lips.

Patterson has a wide goatee that reaches the bottom of his collar, is resting his right forearm on a cloth-draped side-table, and it holding his hat in his lap in his left hand. There is a curtain in the background on the right. "From the Larkin Gallery, S.E. cor. 8th & Arch Sts. ; Philadelphia." printed in black on verso.

Kendree) Shaw of the 22nd Colored Infantry Regiment, turned slightly to the left. Shaw has a dark mustache and goatee, and is resting his right hand on the back of a richly upholstered wooden chair.
