The Ferry map, "Carte de la Nouvle, California", ... is in Hypolite Ferry's "Description de la ... Paris, 1850." An Italian version of a map of California that extends east to the Rocky Mountains. Gold regions are shown by dotted areas. Note most of the rivers of that area were well known by 1851. Some Indian tribes of the southwest are designated as Indiani Yumas (ostili - hostile) and Indiani Apachi (cattivi - evil). Considerable text about the region in Italian surrounds the map. Sub map: Carta particulare delle Baie di Monterey e di San Francisco. Border: Italian script. MS note: 1602. Prime meridian: Paris. Relief: hachures. Graphic Scale: Miles. Kashnor notes, "A later issue of this map locating Boston, New Plymouth, Connecticut and Maryland. A good map is given of the Coast of California north to Cape Blanco, and it locates Port Sir Francis Drake." McLaughlin identifies this as a third state map, printed in 1676. Kashnor notes, "A good specimen of an early decorative map in fine state." Kashnor dates as ca. 1670. Rosenthal lists as early as 1640. Van der Krogt dates to between 1635 and 1670 - without printed text on the verso it is difficult to narrow the date further (9950:2B). Coat of arms with dedication to Constantijn Huygens..
