Blaeu's version of the famous Virginia map. According to Burden, Blaeu purchased the plate for this map from Hondius's widow shortly after Hondius's death in 1629; the map first appeared in Blaeu's atlases in 1630 (Burden, entry 193). Date and publisher based on language and signature on verso, following Van der Krogt and Burden. Date is formed in backwards C. Kashnor notes, "Showing Europe, North Africa, Arabia, and Asia Minor, with the curious insert map of the World, indicating three conjectural locations for Ophir, viz., in South Africa, East Africa, and India." Kashnor gives date of 1624 based on the maps inclusion in the Parergon; the Parergon was first published individually in 1624, but had been included in the Theatrum urbis terrarum as early as 1601 (Van der Krogt, map 0810H:31B). Cartouches: Typical Ortelius with elaborate decoration. Submap: World: "Domini est terra et plenitudo orbis terrarum et universi qui habitant in Eo. Psal. 24." Kashnor notes, "A rare and early map, showing all that was known of the North-West Coast of America. California is shown as a peninsula, Cape Mendocin is located at latitude 54, and the Anian country is in the position of Alaska. In the south Terra Austrailis is represented as an enormous continent stretching around the world from New Guinea to Java. It also locates New Francia, with a city called Canada."
