    Charles Steward journal of the East India Company ship Duchess of Athol

    Manuscripts

    A ship's logbook written by Second Officer Charles Steward, recording the first voyage of the ship Duchess of Athol from England to Canton (Guangzhou), China. Entries run from 26 November 1821 to 24 May 1823. Contents include a crew list, passenger lists, weather reports, navigational records, and details of activities at port in India and China. With heraldic bookplate of Charles Steward. The volume is accompanied by three newspaper clippings, glued on paper, about the murder of Charles Steward, 1844 and 1845. The volume is partially blank.

    Horace Bushnell letter to Scribner, Armstrong, and Company

    Manuscripts

    In this letter by Bushnell, he states: "I send you today my table of contents and title page" (Scribner, Armstrong, and Company published Sermons on living subjects in 1872). He then tells his publishers that he will be traveling to Ripton, Vermont for "two months." He also says that he will "order Mr. Hobbs to send...his plate proofs." He also wonders if "this political scrub race [is] going to affect the book market this autumn."

    Letters and receipts relating to Wells, Fargo & Company

    Letters and receipts either relating to or sent by Wells, Fargo & Company from 1854-1892. Consists of four letters, including a letter to Nat Stein from Marshall Cushing through D.S. Richardson requesting Stein's reminiscences of Wells Fargo for a book project (1892) and a letter to Stein from Joseph S. Roberson telling him of Indian troubles with the Overland Stage Line near Julenburg and $30,000 in losses recently sustained in lost mail. Also includes 15 money order receipts sent by J.L. Martel, L.A. Garnett, H.R. Linderman, E.W. Worsham, and Elizabeth Menzies, on letterheads from Wells Fargo, Adams and Co., and Swamp Land District No.160.

    Francis Rawdon-Hastings, Marquess of Hastings letters

    Manuscripts

    These letters were written to the Scottish advocate and Tory politician Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, and his son Robert Dundas, 2nd Viscount Melville. The first four letters were written from London (to Henry Dundas) and deal with personal things as well as finding a position for a friend, etc. The last three letters were written from Calcutta (to Robert Dundas) and deal with the East India Company, Great Britain's interests in India, as well as British politicians in Calcutta. The other item is a list of pensions Hastings recommended to the "Lord Advocate."
