Description: In this letter by Bushnell, he states: "I send you today my table of contents and title page" (Scribner, Armstrong, and Company published Sermons on living subjects in 1872). He then tells his publishers that he will be traveling to Ripton, Vermont for "two months." He also says that he will "order Mr. Hobbs to send...his plate proofs." He also wonders if "this political scrub race [is] going to affect the book market this autumn."

James Bushnell letters to Ananias Pond

Manuscripts

HM 19385 is dated January 5, 1852, written from Keeseville, New York, and is addressed to "Dear Brother or Son." Bushnell writes that he has heard from Pond's daughter, Fannie, and that Pond seems to want his family to move out to California with him. Bushnell is sorry to hear of Pond's "misfortune" but is sure he will get by it, and writes of relatives and mutual friends. Bushnell has a shop and house at a prison, and hopes to build a forge there as well. He writes "if the Boys take a notion to go to California I would go with them." HM 19386 is written from Browning, Illinois, and dated May 20, 1855. It is addressed to Ananias Pond and Fanny M. Pond, and Bushnell begins the letter "Dear Children." In addition to more details concerning family and friends, Bushnell lists the types of timber on his lot of land, as well as financial details of goods.

Horace Austin letter to William David Lewis

Manuscripts

Mr. Austin informs Mr. Lewis of his business, in which he trades groceries for cotton, and details thereof. He also tells of his family, and how his son has been named Lewis in Mr. Lewis' honor. Through these successes, Austin hopes he has fulfilled the promise made to Mr. Lewis.

Walter Scribner Schuyler letter to his mother

Manuscripts

This letter by Walter Scribner Schuyler, written from Omaha, Nebraska, describes a trip from there, to Franklin, Idaho. The author discusses Franklin's large Mormon community and the practice of polygamy. He also talks about Henry O. Harkness Ranch, the Rose Fork Indian Agency, and General George Crook.

Horace Bell letters to Lewis C. Granger and Belle Granger Ekman

Six letters sent by Horace Bell in Los Angeles to Lewis C. Granger and his sister Belle Granger Ekman between 1870 and 1893. In the first letter to Granger, dated 1870, Bell writes of his family life since 1862, of a lack of heirs and titles in the Gray estate and of his plans to "let the matter go to the state." In 1872 he writes of deciding not to sell his house for his wife's sake and of his son's education; in 1882 he notes "I am grieved at your silence;" in 1885 he writes of being busy in the Superior Court and of a land matter relating to Granger; and in 1887 writes that the "world of rascality here has combined under the leadership of G. Wiley Wells employed by E.J. Baldwin, to brake [sic] down my paper...and disgrace me." He further notes that "this arrant [sic] scoundrel" Wells had gone to Oroville, where Granger lived, and asks Granger to watch him and to send Bell his own recollection's of Bell's time in Oroville between 1852 and 1858. Included is a newspaper clipping with a derogatory story about Bell, which calls him a "drunken debauchee, [who] frequently found his way into the chain-gang," among other things. The final letter was sent to Belle Granger Ekman in 1893, and in it Bell thanks her for sending him a book on the Granger family, and advises her to "take the original biographical sketch and have it published in a neat centerable book."

Hazard Stevens letter to Allen H. Bent

Manuscripts

In this letter written at Phoenix, Arizona to Allen H. Bent, Librarian of the Appalachian Mountain Club, Stevens notes receipt of Bent's letter requesting a photograph for the next publication of Appalachian. Stevens writes that he has written his sister to send him the photo and would appreciate a copy of the magazine, for which he will pay.

John Charles Frémont letter to "Mr. Wright,"

Manuscripts

In this letter to the otherwise unidentified "Mr. Wright" of Washington, Frémont writes thata French company called "the Belgian Miners" has arrived in San Francisco, and are under lease to him. He shall put them to work immediately "on a good vein" and writes that "their report to France will be of great importance." During his time in the South, Frémont reports that he "obtained a great deal of information relative to mines." He has found another rich vein, but is not sure of the ore it contains - he has sent a piece to England for identification - and has acquired a large amount of land that may be of considerable value. Frémont states that they have no commissioner, but hopes the President will "send out others without delay." He hopes Mr. Wright will act on his behalf in this and other matters.
