Provenance: Purchased from John Anderson, Jr., . ca 1914. In 1910, the documents were offered for sale by Alexander Carel Paul George Ridder van Rappard who had inherited them from his grandfather Frans Alexander Ridder Van Rappard (d. 1867), a noted collector. They were sold in June 1910 at a Frederick Muller & Co. sale in Amsterdam to John Anderson, Jr. Anderson had the documents translated by J.F. J. de Villers, Chief of the Map Room of the British Museum; the Riviere & Son bindery made a special box. Anderson later sold the manuscript to Henry E. Huntington.

Letters and documents relating to a proposed East India Company Anglo-Philippine expedition
Manuscripts
Letters and documents relating to a scheme of the East India Company and the British Government to send a commercial, naval and military expedition to the Philippines. Some of the letters and documents are the product of the Committee of Secrecy of the Court of Directors and are written in cipher. The proposed scheme was never carried out as the East India Company forces were needed elsewhere in 1780.

The collection consists of materials gathered for the publishing of local histories in California and Nevada from 1875-1890 (most of which relates to Yuba and Sutter counties in California). There is also some material on mining in California and Nevada (especially the Comstock Lode) and the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance. The collection also contains some materials on individuals such as Thomas Berdue, Samuel Brannan, Kit Carson, and William Thorrington. The collection also contains three scrapbooks of press clippings about the histories, 12 original drawings, and two books of engravings.

Charles Steward journal of the East India Company ship Duchess of Athol
Manuscripts
A ship's logbook written by Second Officer Charles Steward, recording the first voyage of the ship Duchess of Athol from England to Canton (Guangzhou), China. Entries run from 26 November 1821 to 24 May 1823. Contents include a crew list, passenger lists, weather reports, navigational records, and details of activities at port in India and China. With heraldic bookplate of Charles Steward. The volume is accompanied by three newspaper clippings, glued on paper, about the murder of Charles Steward, 1844 and 1845. The volume is partially blank.
