Telegrams--Peking (Beijing) to Hong Yen Chang

Manuscripts

The Chang papers primarily contain photographs and scrapbooks related to the Chang and Ah Tye (pronounced Ah Tie) families. Photographs include family portraits and casual shots, such as Charlotte and Ora Chang posing in front of a home. The scrapbooks consist of photographs spanning from the early 1900s through mid-1900s. Events such as the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, conventions, trips, graduations, and campus life are captured. There are also professional papers concerning Chang's work as a diplomat and consul for the Republic of China (Box 2, 14 and Box 3, 4). In one cipher cable, the message reads "Chang Hong Yen appointed Consul at Vancouver. Please urge Chang to take office as soon as possible..." (Box 2, 14). Also found in the collection are clippings and excerpts related to a bitter dispute over the Kong Chow Temple in San Francisco, California. Constructed in 1854, Charlotte Chang's father, Yee Ah Tye, was given a plot of land for the temple by the city of San Francisco for his work as an interpreter. Charlotte Chang also appeared to have a close relationship with Soong Ching-ling, a leader of the 1911 revolution that established the Republic of China. In a letter dated March 14, 1917, Ching-ling writes, "A friend of ours, General Julian S. Carr expects to arrive in May at Frisco, &; I am sending you a slight token of my love & gratitude for your kindness to me when I too was a perfect stranger to you" (Box 1, 13). Other items in the collection are newspaper clippings, printed matter related to Chang's posthumous appointment, Chinese calligraphy, and Ah Tye's family tree.

T. Moriya commercial photograph album of Beijing and Tianjin after the Boxer Uprising

Visual Materials

A commercial photograph album published by T. Moriya, Yokohama, Japan, containing 50 hand-colored photographs of scenes in Beijing and Tianjin following the Boxer Uprising in China. The album has decorative lacquered covers and folds out accordion style, with commercially-made photographs mounted on both sides of the leaves. It was most likely created as a souvenir album for the international military forces of the Eight-Nation Alliance that took part in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. All photographs have printed captions in English in the negative, and most have handwritten descriptions in French below the photographs, indicating the previous owner may have been a French officer or soldier who took part in the crisis. Images include famous sites in Beijing and Tianjin, some of which are partly ruined; group portraits of international soldiers and marines; and three images of the execution (beheading) of Chinese Boxers. One photograph shows the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Victory in Tientsin, which burned down after the Allies' bombardment in 1900, accompanied by an extensive handwritten note in French in the margin.

Photograph album of China during the occupation by the Eight-Nation Alliance

Visual Materials

An album of 80 photographs of Beijing, China, after the invasion of the Eight-Nation Alliance during the Boxer Uprising in 1900. The high-quality photographs were presumably taken by a French military officer, as many images feature French officers and soldiers, and one image depicts the French flag flying on top of a city gate. A few other Western officers are seen in group portraits, riding horses at camp, or posed with Chinese residents. A series of images shows the construction of a music bandstand by French and Chinese workers, most likely in the French Legation in Beijing. Other subjects include portraits of Chinese women in traditional clothing, Chinese soldiers, Beijing buildings and street scenes, and Chinese workers and families.

Defence of foreign legations, Peking, China, June 20th to Aug. 14th, 1900 [cartographic material]

Rare Books

One of the first official map of Beijing's Legation Quarter (Dong Jiaomin Xiang / 東江米巷) to illustrate the events of the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901) and the siege of the Foreign Legations. The map was prepared by the American military engineer Harley Bascom "Fergie" Ferguson, who was sent to Beijing in 1900 as part of the China Relief Expedition. Produced in cyanotype (blueprint) in very small quantities, this map forms the basis of all subsequent maps of the Legation Quarter's defense.
