    One of the first official map of Beijing's Legation Quarter (Dong Jiaomin Xiang / 東江米巷) to illustrate the events of the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901) and the siege of the Foreign Legations. The map was prepared by the American military engineer Harley Bascom "Fergie" Ferguson, who was sent to Beijing in 1900 as part of the China Relief Expedition. Produced in cyanotype (blueprint) in very small quantities, this map forms the basis of all subsequent maps of the Legation Quarter's defense.

    Manuscripts

    The collection consists of manuscripts, letters, documents, maps, 35 notebooks and field books related to Ephraim G. Squier's unrealized project for the Honduras Interoceanic Railway. There is material related to explorations and surveys with reference to the practicality of a ship canal in the area, as well as maps of both Central and South America.

    Manuscript map showing the northern part of Rhode Island from Fogland Ferry to Bristol Point Ferry. The Battle of Rhode Island took place on August 29, 1778. This maps depicts the withdrawal of American troops northward on the island. Shows the roads from Newport leading north and shows the locations of the Hessian, Anspach, and British forces on Quaker Hill and the Continental Army positions on Wind-Mill Hill. The Continental Army held Wind-Mill Hill for 2 days, before evacuating the island completely on September 1, 1778. Colored.

Other correspondents represented in the collection include: A.J.B Beresford Hope, Patrick William Campbell, Sir John Cowan, John Nielson Gladstone, Abraham Hayward, Henry and Catherine Holiday, Stafford Henry Northcote (Earl of Iddesleigh), George Cornewall Lewis, Henry William Primrose, Archibald Philip Primrose (Earl of Rosebery), and Robert Lowe (Viscount Sherbrooke).
