    Collection of children's books in original paper covers published by McLoughlin Brothers from approximately 1853 to 1880s. The covers are printed in color and most have color illustrations. Some are printed on linen for extra durability. The bulk of the collection appears to be a gift of Eleanor Bissell, October 1945, but additional materials were incorporated.

    Young Folks' Drawing Book

    One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled Young Folks' Drawing Book, published by Billings, Clapp & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1886. This advertisement/drawing book promotes both Nichol's Bark & Iron and encourages drawing practice. It is 16 unnumbered pages in length, and contains manufacturer's advertisements, testimonials (dated 1884-1886), and illustrations for copying. Each of the illustrations are printed against a numbered and lettered grid; a blank grid is printed on the facing page for copying. The front and back covers feature chromolithograph illustrations; on the front cover is an image of children drawing and playing, on the back, a young boy sits wearing a red tam and sash, with the tam bearing the name of "Nichol's Bark & Iron." None of the illustrations within the booklet have been copied. "Trautmann Bailey & Blampey, N.Y." (chromolithography) is printed at the bottom of the front cover.

    One drawing book entitled Schaeffer Piano Drawing Book, published by Schaeffer Piano Mfg. Co., Chicago, ca. 1895?. This 12-page promotional booklet advertises Schaeffer pianos. Each unnumbered page contains one or more drawings and is covered by a sheet of tracing paper. The front and back covers feature chromolithograph illustrations; on the front cover is a little boy in a brown suit playing a violin. On the back cover, an image of two children peeking over a circular advertisement for Schaeffer Pianos is at the center of the cover. Some of the illustrations within the book are advertisements themselves: such as images of "Style 30" and "Style 40" of the pianos, and an image of the Schaeffer Mfg. Co. warehouse. Other images include an "American Indian Chief"; "Capitol Washington", and "A Street Group in the Philippine Islands." Advertising text is on the insides of the front and back covers. None of the images have been traced.

    This manuscript covers the entire history of the Newhall Land and Farning Company from its founding in 1883. It talks about several of the ranches owned by the Newhalls; land sales (including a sale of land to William Randolph Hearst); amounts paid for land; cattle and livestock; farming; the town of Newhall; the St. Frances Dam Disaster; and orange trees.

    One tracing book entitled The Favorite Drawing and Tracing Book, published by Graham & Matlack, New York, ca. 1900. "0201 Tracing Book Series" is printed in the lower right-hand corner of the front cover. This book is comprised of 8 unnumbered plates of black and white images for tracing. Bound in front of each plate is a sheet of tracing paper. The front and back covers are chromolithograph images; the front cover shows two puppies leaning over an easel; the back cover features an oval vignette of two children on a wooden sled. The illustrations for tracing are whimsical in nature; they feature animals dressed in clothing, often doing silly things like riding snails. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. All of the leaves of tracing paper have been used to some extent.
