In this watercolor, a wide view of golden fields gives way to a sweeping vista punctuated by a distant tower. It is a gentle landscape, without such dramatic features as mountains or ruins, and this quality is echoed in the quiet manner in which it is painted. DeWint dragged his brush across the page in long, unbroken strokes, some of which span the entire width of the sheet. The palette of muted yellows and mauves suggests late summer or early fall. The artist applied the pigment wet over a roughly textured paper, deliberately leaving the depressions unfilled so that the resulting white specks would give an impression of freshness and sparkling light. The immediacy of DeWint’s application of watercolor in this work suggests his emotional engagement with the landscape and a sense that what he depicts is true to life (2022).
