One drawing book entitled Bartholomew's National System of Industrial Drawing, Sketching from Objects, New Edition, No. 16, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Potter, Ainsworth & Co., Boston, New York and Chicago, 1883. The subtitle (listed on page 1) of this 20-page book is "Principles of Linear Perspective". Within the book are 46 lithograph illustrations, usually more than one per exercise. Each unnumbered exercise is comprised of textual instructions, one or more images and space for drawing. Text on the first page explains the purpose of this book: "... to furnish a short course of instruction in the drawing of outlines of objects as they appear to the eye when seen from one point." The first part of the book is devoted to explanation of principles and rules relating to linear perspective; the remainder is a series of exercises which progress in difficulty. Some of the exercises include: boxes and cubes, a house, a chair, a bucket, and a scene of a house on the side of a road. The final two pages are a continuation of the notes and principles found at the beginning of the book. The front cover is decorated with a simple but decorative frame surrounding the title and edition, and an Egyptian aten design appears below the edition statement, and the publisher's statement is below that The book number is in the upper left and right-hand corners of the front cover. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. On the back cover are several publisher's advertisements for various school book series; the headline at the top of the page reads "Popular Educational Series". None of the exercises within have been completed. ".50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the front cover.
