This collection forms part of the John Haskell Kemble maritime collection compiled by American maritime historian John Haskell Kemble (1912-1990). Kemble assembled his archive by saving souvenirs from his own travels as well as by purchasing items from travel agencies and other collectors. There are over 24,000 items in the collection including ship histories, brochures, schedules, passenger lists, accommodation plans, menus, and publicity pamphlets. More than 925 shipping companies are represented including American President Lines, Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd., Cunard Steamship Company, Holland Amerika Lijn, Matson Navigation Company, Pacific Mail Steamship Company, Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, and White Star Line.

Port view under steam at sea, headlands and fortifications in the background, to the left. The image is of the first Tennessee operated by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company; built in 1849, she was purchased in October, 1849, from the Savannah Steam Navigation Company; from 1850 to 1853, she operated between San Francisco and Panama; she was wrecked on 6 March 1853, at Bolinas Bay, four miles north of the entrance to San Francisco Bay. The collection consists of the business records of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. The records are made up ships' logs, waybills, manifests, personnel records, financial records, notes of protest, freight claims and other business papers. The collection also contains some records of the Occidental and Oriental Steamship Company.
