The image is of the first Tennessee operated by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company; built in 1849, she was purchased in October, 1849, from the Savannah Steam Navigation Company; from 1850 to 1853, she operated between San Francisco and Panama; she was wrecked on 6 March 1853, at Bolinas Bay, four miles north of the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Webb, and lost on her maiden voyage from New York to San Francisco after foundering on 23 December 1853 in the Atlantic; she was finally abandoned on 4 January 1853. Focus of item: San Francisco.

Stephens was launched on 21 September 1852; she cleared New York for San Francisco on 17 December 1852, and arrived on 3 April 1853 with passengers from Panama; was in service, 1853-1860, San Francisco to Panama; sold, 1878, to Sisson, Wallace & Co., sent to Alaska as a cannery; broken up 1879. The sheet shows the profile and two decks of the steamship Starbuck; the plans for the decks show passenger accommodations, along with the dining saloon and other amenities. Hand drawn on vellum. "Pacific Mail Steamship Co.'s Steamer Starbuck"--title at top of sheet. No scale given. "Case No. 406s Sheet No. 5442s"--purple stamp, lower right corner, numbers in ms., in ink; stamp and the case number are the same as the one found on ephKMSP 006, indicating the origin of the drawing is Union Iron Works Co., San Francisco. The Starbuck was purchased in 1886 from William H. Starbuck of New York who had salvaged, renamed, and reflagged the vessel in 1885 after she had gone ashore at Moriches, Long Island; Pacific Mail overhauled her engine and hull in 1891; she was lost, without causalities, on February 28, 1899, after striking an uncharted rock off coast of Nicaragua. Focus of item: Starbuck.
