The image is of the first Tennessee operated by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company; built in 1849, she was purchased in October, 1849, from the Savannah Steam Navigation Company; from 1850 to 1853, she operated between San Francisco and Panama; she was wrecked on 6 March 1853, at Bolinas Bay, four miles north of the entrance to San Francisco Bay.     "RNOX 37.50 The Union, which operated from San Francisco to Panama from 1850 to 1851, first for the People's Line and then for the Independent Line, was wrecked at San Quintín Bay, Baja California, on July 5, 1851 supposedly due to intoxicated crew; all passengers and crew were saved. The Northerner, built in 1847, was purchased by Pacific Mail Steamship Company from Empire City Line in December 1850; she became spare steamer in 1853, and was wrecked, January 5, 1860, after striking Blunt's Reef, south of Humbolt Bay.

    "153.--"--lower corner, in ms. in pencil. The print shows the first San Francisco, built in 1853 by William H. Webb, and lost on her maiden voyage from New York to San Francisco after foundering on 23 December 1853 in the Atlantic; she was finally abandoned on 4 January 1853. Focus of item: San Francisco.
