Description: A photograph album documenting the large-scale construction of New England hydroelectric dams in New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Maine, including several photographs of the Wyman Dam construction in Bingham, Maine, dated 1929-1930, and Ayer's Island Dam in Bristol, New Hampshire. The images include both commercial and amateur photographs depicting progress on the dams, construction sites, and power facilities, with many group portraits of workers. Some of the photographs have dates and captions written on the negatives.

Photograph albums documenting ship building at the yard in National City, California, and construction of dams

Visual Materials

252 photographs from 3 albums (2 have been disbound) chiefly documenting ship building at the Concrete Ship Constructors shipyard in National City, California, in the early 1940s and construction work on dams. The images of the ship yard depict equipment and machinery, workers and supervisors, views of ships including the Concrete No. 1 ship, as well as an award ceremony. The collection also includes photographs documenting various dam projects including the Alcova Dam Project by the W.E. Callahan Construction Co. and Gunther and Shirley, in Wyoming in 1935-1937; the Madden Dam by W.E. Callahan Construction Co. and Peterson, Shirley and Gunther on the Chagres River in Panama in 1933-1934 (20 views); and a few images of miscellaneous construction including on the Shasta Dam in California, Obey River Dam in Celina, Tennessee, and the North Conches Dam in San Angelo, Texas. There are also a few later snapshots of construction projects, including ones from the 1960s documenting a Pacific Link Belt truck and crane. Collection accompanied by the booklet "Teamwork Wins," documenting a contest held by Concrete Ship Constructors, National City, California, April 1944. The collection was compiled by Arthur B. Summers, a hull superintendent of Concrete Ship Constructors in the 1940s.

Travel album including Yosemite, New England, and Yellowstone

Visual Materials

Album of amateur snapshots taken during trips chiefly in California, New England, and Yellowstone Park, Wyoming, from 1903 to 1905, with handwritten captions identifying the locaions depicted. The album begins with photographs documenting a trip to California beginning in the Yosemite Valley in May 1903 before progressing to Mariposa Grove, the Sacramento River, Shasta Springs, Sisson (Mount Shasta), San Francisco, the University of California, Berkeley, campus, including houses identified as "my homes," Santa Cruz, Monterey, the Hotel Del Monte, and the Santa Barbara Mission. There are images of New England and Upstate New York from 1903 to 1905 including Lake Pleasant, Massachusetts, Deerfield Valley, Connecticut, Charlestown, New Hampshire, South Framingham, Massachusetts, winter in Boston Harbor (1903-04), Lake Winnipesaukee, Seal Harbor and Mt. Desert Maine, and the New York State Capitol in Albany. There are also photographs from a trip in Summer 1905 to Yellowstone Park, Wyoming, with stops along the way in St. Paul, Minnesota, and at Minnehaha Falls, Minneapolis. Of note are a few photographs of President Theodore Roosevelt's arrival in Yosemite, including one captioned "President Roosevelt and John Muir." The photographs primarily depict the natural scenery including waterfalls, lakes, trees, and mountains, as well as hotels, tourist destinations, and landmarks. There are also some images of ice skating, sledding, and sleigh rides during the winter of 1904-05 in New England. The compiler of the album is unidentified though there is one photograph of a young couple on horseback at Yosemite labeled "You and I."

Construction of Dam No. 6, San Joaquin River

Visual Materials

A bound set of 29 commercial photographs showing construction progress of Dam 6 on the San Joaquin River in Fresno County, California, from June 1921 to May 1923. The photographs include views of the river prior to construction, rail lines being built to bring in machines and materials, construction of various sections of the dam, men at work, and the dam upon completion. A one-page printed description of the dam is bound in before the photographs. It is likely that these photographs were taken by Southern California Edison's first company photographer G. Haven Bishop (1879 - 1972).
