  A disbound photograph album with 85 commercial and family photographs documenting travel aboard the S.S. Grenada to locations including Havana, Cuba; Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Chihuahua, Mexico; Venezuela; Grenada; and Port of Spain, Trinidad. There are several port scenes in various locations, showing ships, local vendors, and coal being loaded onto ships. Photographs taken in Havana show the harbor, including the sunken remains of the USS Maine; the cathedral; and Castillo del Morro. Photographs of Venezuela show indigenous dwellings and the Orinoco River. Photographs of Mexico show views of Mexico City including interiors of the Castillo de Chapultepec, an aqueduct in Chihuahua, and the city of Orizaba.

  F. C. Thompson photograph album

  Visual Materials

  An album of photographs taken by American businessman F. C. Thompson, documenting his time living in Yokohama, Japan, from 1920 to 1921. Thompson managed the Dollar Steamship Lines office in Yokohama, and is seen experiencing some local customs and socializing mostly with other Western men and women, who are identified in handwritten captions. They are seen at various locations including the Grand Hotel, the Oriental Palace Hotel, the Yacht and Rowing Club, and visiting nearby rural areas. Many images depict street scenes, architecture and people in Japan, including scenes of female laborers, agricultural crops and workers, and "elite" women traveling in hand-carried slings. Thompson is seen joining a Japanese motorcycle club, at a rugby match, and on vacation in the countryside in a traditional Japanese house. Some images depict the ships and crews of the Dollar Steamship Lines and Pacific Mail Steamship Company (which would eventually merge into one company). The photographs are accompanied by detailed captions identifying locations.

  Albums of European views

  Two albums of commercial photographs from Europe, especially Spain, Italy, England, Switzerland, and France. The first album includes photographs of Granada, focusing on the Alhambra, city streets, and ancient and modern buildings. Some of the images have been amateurishly hand-tinted, and several bear the mark of Linares fotografo. Photographs of the French Riviera by "ND Phot" show Nice, Menton, La Turbie, and Monaco, with special attention shown to Monte Carlo and the Casino there. Photographs of Naples, some by Alinari and some by Sommer, show street scenes, portraits of locals, a funeral, piazzas, and monuments such as Forte S. Elmo and Galleria Umberto I. Other subjects in the first volume in smaller numbers are Genoa, Vesuvius, Pompeii, and Montblanc. The second album begins with photographs of Rome including several photographs of marble sculptures by Cenova and Bernini. Photographs of Florence show palaces, squares, monuments, the Campanile, and the Duomo. The majority of pictures of Lucerne are by Bruno and Arthur Wehrli, known professionally as the Gebrüder Wehrli. A small number of photographs of palaces in France, including Fountainbleau, is followed by views of London. The London photographs are signed variously by "L. S. & P. Co." and "Stereoscopic Co." (which both seem to be the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company), "G. W. W.", "F. F. & Co.", and "J. V."

  Photograph album of China, Korea, and Japan

  A photograph album containing 263 photographs of China, Korea, and Japan, dating from the time of the Boxer Uprising in China to the Russo-Japanese War, 1901 to 1905. The photographs are primarily unique images, along with some commercial photographs and foldout panoramas, and many have handwritten captions. The album's inside cover is inscribed: "John Rory Macey / H.M.S. Blenheim / China Station / Vol. II / Jan 1st 1901 - July 18th, 1905"; Macey was a naval engineer in the British Admiralty and most likely took some of the photographs, particularly naval-related scenes, and images of British servicemen. Photographic subjects in China include navy ships in the port of Weihaiwei, street scenes in Peking (Beijing) and other cities, Chinese residents, monuments (including the Forbidden Palace under foreign occupation), palaces, gardens, and temples. A number of photographs focus on the aftermath of the Boxer Uprising, including ruined buildings. The second portion of the album depicts scenes in Korea during the Russo-Japanese War; these include Korean people in daily activities, street scenes, commercial images of Chemulpo, and the palace grounds in Seoul. The third portion of the album contains amateur and commercial photographs of Japan, including the port cities of Maizuru and Yokohama, Japanese residents, tea ceremonies, the hot spring resort of Tonosawa, and panoramic images of the Osaka Exhibition of 1903. At the back of the album are 17 large, hand-colored photographs of Japan, including images of landscapes, street vendors, and Japanese women in genre scenes.

  Western Journey photograph album and travel narrative

  A volume of photographs accompanied by a typescript travel narrative by Thomas Recknagel, a Cornell University undergraduate, documenting his travels by automobile and railroad in the summer of 1938. The bound volume is titled "Western Journey" and begins with snapshots taken during a train trip from Ithaca, New York, through Chicago, to San Francisco, where Recknagel met his parents and family friends to travel by car. They headed north through Oregon to British Columbia, where their trip included a cricket match in Vancouver; Victoria; a boat trip around the Gulf Islands; and a visit to the University of British Columbia, where Arthur Recknagel had taken a visiting lecturer position. The group took a return train trip through the Rocky Mountains, the Great Lakes, and across Canada to Port McNicoll, Ontario. There are two appendices of photographs from Recknagel's parents' trip in the beginning of the year, with several snapshots of Yosemite. The back of the volume also has 20 commercial photographs (3.5 x 5-inches) of Vancouver and the Fraser River area in British Columbia. Notable in the album are a series of photographs and narrative of the rescue of a man who had attempted suicide by jumping into the sea in San Francisco.

  Views of Trail, British Columbia

  A collection of seven cabinet card photographs of the town of Trail on the Columbia River in British Columbia. Includes views of Trail Creek Landing, an elevated view of the town, street scenes with storefronts including signs for the Arlington Hotel and Kaake & Williams, a sternwheeler steamboat unloading passengers, and the smelter at Trail Creek Landing. Also included is a photographic postcard of the Light House, Pelee Island, Canada, dated 1910.
