    One boxed set of watercolor paints, untitled, manufactured by Thomas Reeves and Sons, ca. 1781. The set is comprised of 12 embossed cakes of watercolor paint within a wooden box with a sliding lid. The paints are each within a wooden divider, and are labeled with printed paper labels. The two rows of paint cakes occupy two-thirds of the box; the remaining third is (presumably) for storing paintbrushes. Affixed to the bottom of this third is a printed affidavit which reads: "Society for the Encouragement of Arts, manufacture and Commerce, Adelphi, May 1781. Gentlemen, I am desired by the Society to return you their thanks for the obliging present you have been pleased to make to them of Box of Colours prepared by you for the use of painters in watercolours an art so well adapted to the purpose of forwarding that [?] of polite arts could not fail of being acceptable to the society. Thos. Reeves and Son, Colour manufacturer to Her Majesty and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. I am Gentlemen, your most obedient humble servant. Sam'l Moore, Secretary." The cakes of paint are embossed with a shield and the name of the color. This is the oldest paint box in the collection, and was acquired by DK in Springfield, MA at an Ephemera/Antiques Fair, ca. 1994. Title supplied by cataloger.

    One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled Superfine Painting Colors, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1880. The set is comprised of 40 rectangular, embossed cakes of watercolor paint, two round porcelain dishes, two paint brushes, and two embossed cakes of charcoal. The set is housed within a wooden box with a sliding lid. The paints are divided into 5 rows of 8 each, and each cake of paint is embossed with an image of a family crest. The lid is not labeled; a label is affixed, however, to the bottom of the paint brush compartment.

    One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled Fine Art Colour Box, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1890. The set is comprised of 18 rectangular cakes of watercolor paint, two large(er) and two small porcelain dishes, and two sticks of charcoal. Each of the cakes of paint is embossed with an image of an eagle. The set is housed within a wooden box with a sliding lid. A chromolithograph of an easel, a palette, and a table holding books and instruments is mounted to the lid. "Made in Germany" is printed below the title on this lid image. One of the cakes of paint has "SEPIE" embossed on it, and two of the cakes of paint are missing. The cakes of paint are affixed to the bottom of the box, and are contained within wooden dividers.

The set is comprised of several small cakes of watercolor paint, one small, round porcelain dish, and two quill paint brushes. The set is housed within a wooden box with a sliding lid. The box is divided into two halves lengthwise by a wooden divider onto which a paper label identifying each color is barely discernible. This box is similar to sets 5 and 10 in Box Number 75. The set is comprised of 9 small, rectangular cakes of watercolor paint, 2 very small stone dishes, a color portrait of a lady, and a piece of glass the same size. Each of the cakes of paint are embossed with an image of a crown. The set is housed within a paperboard box. The lid is illustrated with a color image of a rectangular wooden palette, the title, and spots of color.

The set is comprised of 28 cakes of watercolor paint, two small porcelain dishes, one paintbrush, a piece of glass, and a 5-inch paper ruler. The cakes of paint are embossed with an artist's palette design, and are contained within wooden dividers in a wooden box (no lid). This box is housed within a paperboard box (which does have a lid). Mounted onto the paperboard lid is a chromolithograph image of three girls, each painting a toy elephant. "2.00" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the image on the lid.
