Description: One drawing book entitled Philips' Drawing Copy Book, Designed & Drawn by a Practical Teacher, No. 3, published by George Philip & Son, London, ca. 1870. This book is comprised of 8 lithographed, unnumbered plates. Each plate is comprised of an image (buildings, such as houses and churches) and space for copying. There is no text. The title on the front cover is superimposed on a lithograph view of a man who is drawing at the edge of a lake, with a mountainous background. Most of the interior plates are signed by different artists. These include: Greet; Coalport; Birmingham; Troubridge; Bridnorth[?]; Douglas; the last image is unsigned. At the bottom of the front cover a blue paper label is mounted. It reads: "Boston School Supply Co. 15 Bromfield St., Boston, Mass. John A Boyle, Manager." The back cover bears a publisher's advertisement for "Philips' Drawing Copy Books, series of easy landscapes."

The Youth's New Drawing Book, Containing Progressive Information on Sketching and Drawing Landscape Scenery, &c. Designed for Self Instruction, or the Use of Teachers

One drawing book entitled The Youth's New Drawing Book, Containing Progressive Information on Sketching and Drawing Landscape Scenery, &c. Designed for Self Instruction, or the Use of Teachers, published by C.P. Huestis, New York, 1844. This drawing book is 24 pages in length, and contains 11 numbered woodcut illustrations, labeled as plates. As stated in the preface, "the author has endeavoured to place within reach of ingenious young artists, ... all requisite information to attain a practical knowledge of the art." The focus of this book is on teaching the student to make a "correct drawing"; the lessons instruct on perspective, proportion, outline and form. Some of the illustrations include: a large house, a cow, and several views. "Vincent L. Dill, Stereotyper" is printed on the verso of the title page. The front cover bears the same image as Plate V, with the title superimposed on the image. The final page and the back cover are duplicate publisher's advertisements.

Drawing Book, For Copies

Two drawing books of original and copied drawings entitled Drawing Book, For Copies, one created by Carrie Cooley, the other by Mattie Cooley, manufactured by John Marsh, Manufacturing Stationer and Importer, Boston, ca. 1855. Each book is 12 unnumbered leaves in length and contains pencil drawings copied from other sources. Both books have illustrated front covers; a delicate and elaborate floral frame surrounds the title and a vignette of a steam engine train. The back covers are manufacturer's advertisements. The drawing book in Env. 42 is bound in green paper, and "Carrie Cooley" is written in ms., in pencil, on the front cover. The drawing book in Env. 43 is bound in beige paper, and "Mattie [?] Cooley" is written in ms., in pencil, on the front cover, as well as in ink in the upper right-hand corner. Tissue paper guard sheets are bound in between each of the leaves in both books.

Child's Drawing Book

One drawing book/manufacturer's advertisement entitled Child's Drawing Book, published by Vose & Sons Piano Co., Boston, ca. 1910. The front cover shows two girls sitting on a rug, one is holding a drawing slate, the other is drawing on a slate. The back cover image is of a child, sitting on a cliff above the ocean, painting on a canvas; above the image is printed "Piper & McIntire, 888 Elm Street, Manchester, New Hampshire." The book, a promotional piece for the Vose Piano company, includes advertisements for the company's pianos on the inside front and back covers, and two images of Vose pianos within the book itself. Eight images in outline, along with tracing paper overlays, are present. None of the images have been filled in. The first image has been partially traced in pencil.

Bartholomew's Drawing Book, No. 2 and No. 3

Two drawing books entitled Bartholomew's Drawing Book, No. 2 and No. 3, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Shepard, Clark & Brown, Boston (No. 2) and by Cyrus G. Cooke, Boston (No. 3), 1855. Each book is comprised of numbered half-sheets on which there is an image to be copied, interleaved with blank whole sheets for copying and completing each of the exercises. The majority of exercises within both books are buildings, such as houses, sheds, and barns. The front covers feature identical design and typeface elements; the title words are above and below an image of a right hand, holding a pencil to paper. The front cover illustration is signed by J. W. Orr., N.Y. Book No. 2 contains 12 numbered exercises (nos. 13-24, not in sequential order). The inside front cover lists 29 questions pertaining to the lessons learned in Book 1. These are followed by "Observations and Suggestions to the Teacher". This copy is lacking the back cover. Book No. 3 contains 9 numbered exercises (25-36: various). On the inside front cover of book No. 3 is a full-page "Note to the Teacher", in which there are outlined 5 general instructions. Both the outside and insides of the back cover are blank. A scene has been drawn on the inside of the back cover. Both books 2 and 3 have been completed, and both contain additional original artwork that is not part of the numbered exercises, and these have been completed as well.

A New Series of First Class Drawing Copies

One drawing book entitled A New Series of First Class Drawing Copies, published by J. Cooke & Sons, London, ca. 1880? This book is comprised of 7 lithograph plates intended for copying. Each of the plates, with one exception, contains two images. The image on the left-hand side is a picture in outline, and the image on the right is that same image, but complete with shading and texture. The one exception is a full-page illustration that is already complete with shading and texture. The front and back covers are printed in red. The title on the front cover is within a decorative frame. The back cover features a vignette of 3 children who are drawing. "10--" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.

One book of original drawings entitled Drawing Book, created by Frederick Harris of Springfield, Massachusetts. The drawing book was "Sold by M.J. Whipple & Co., Importers of Artists' Materials" in Boston, ca. 1850. The book is 10 unnumbered leaves in length, and contains 15 original pencil drawings. The front cover is an engraving; an elaborate, decorative frame surrounds the title and three vignettes. The original pencil drawings are primarily of houses and buildings; there is also an image of a modern-looking couch. None of the drawings are signed. "F.H." is written in ms., in ink, on the insides of the covers. "Frederick Harris. Springfield, Mass." is written in ms., in ink, on the front cover.
