    One drawing book entitled Schaeffer Piano Drawing Book, published by Schaeffer Piano Mfg. Co., Chicago, ca. 1895?. This 12-page promotional booklet advertises Schaeffer pianos. Each unnumbered page contains one or more drawings and is covered by a sheet of tracing paper. The front and back covers feature chromolithograph illustrations; on the front cover is a little boy in a brown suit playing a violin. On the back cover, an image of two children peeking over a circular advertisement for Schaeffer Pianos is at the center of the cover. Some of the illustrations within the book are advertisements themselves: such as images of "Style 30" and "Style 40" of the pianos, and an image of the Schaeffer Mfg. Co. warehouse. Other images include an "American Indian Chief"; "Capitol Washington", and "A Street Group in the Philippine Islands." Advertising text is on the insides of the front and back covers. None of the images have been traced.

    One drawing book entitled Andrews' Slate Drawing Book, revised by Prof. Duncan McGregor, drawings by A.F. Brooks, and published by A.H. Andrews & Co., Chicago, copyright 1878. Fourth edition. Cover title reads: Andrews' Progressive Slate Drawing Book: Containing all the pictures on Andrews Noiseless Drawing Slates, for Schools and Families. Front cover also has publication information: Chicago: A.H. Andrews & Co., 1878. Front cover has a decorative border. On the back cover is an image of a framed drawing slate which reads "Andrews Patent Noiseless Drawing Slate". A notice on the verso of the title page, in part, states that "Prof. Duncan McGregor, President of the State Normal School, Plateville, Wis." This book has 38 numbered pages, 29 of which are illustrated, and the remaining pages contain text. The first 2 and last 2 pages are blank and unnumbered. The inside back cover contains advertisements for school equipment and furniture, and an applied label for "Baker, Pratt & Co., School Furnishers, Importers, Booksellers, and Stationers, 142 & 144 Grand St., New York." The images proceed from simple to more complex.

    One drawing book entitled Child's First Book. Drawing Series. Self Instructor, No. 1, by Josiah Holbrook, published by H.H. Hawley & Co., Utica, New York, and J.H. Mather & Co., Hartford, copyright 1846. The book contains 22 numbered pages of instructional text, a preface (pp. 2-4), and several pages of images for copying. Stated in the "Directions to Parents and Teachers" is the following: "With the Book before them, and a slate and pencil in their hands, they become 'self instructors'. As the pupil advances, paper may take the place of a slate, used with a lead pencil, pen, or both." The images are divided up into labeled categories: "Geometry; Containing Vessels; Household Utensils; Cutting Instruments; Tools; Articles of Dress, &c.; Agricultural Implements; House, Boat, &c.; Animals; Human Figures; Primary Solids; Diagonals of Squares; Mensuration; Circumscribed & Inscribed Figures; Regular Solids; and Geography." The insides of the front and back covers, as well as the back cover, are blank.

    One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled Tiny Tots Drawing Book, published by Emerson Piano Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1885. Printed at the bottom of the front cover is "4- Little Pets." This 8-page booklet contains several images on each of the 8 pages, with leaves of tracing paper bound in between each leaf, for tracing. The front and back covers are chromolithographs; the front cover features a little girl holding two rabbits; the back cover features a smaller image of a little girl near a rosebush. Printed on the back cover is: "Compliments of Emerson Piano Co., 110 Boylston Street, Boston, Mass. Western Branch: 195 Wabash Ave., Chicago." Images for tracing include a horse, a pony, chickens, birds and rabbits. Some of the images have been traced. A blue ink stamp on the back cover reads: "Frank M. Grow, Sole Agent, Rutland. VT." "Winslow Bowen" is written in ms., in pencil, along the outer edge of the front cover.

    One drawing book entitled Columbus Drawing Book for the Kiddies, published by Capital City Dairy Co., Columbus, Ohio, ca. 1917. The front cover shows a girl sitting at a table, drawing in a book with crayons; below the image is the subtext "Color with crayons, Win a Prize, See Inside." On the back cover is an image of four children carrying a box of Columbus Oleomargarine on two poles, as if it were on a sedan chair; above the image is printed "Look for this display in your grocer's store." A promotional piece for Columbus Oleomargarine, the booklet describes on the front inside cover and first page how to enter the contest (full instructions are given on pp. 10 & 11). The last page and back cover have recipes "in which Margarine has been Thoroughly Tested." There are 12 images in the book--six in color, six in outline. The outlined images were to be filled in using the complementary color image to its side as a guide. Each image illustrates a rhyming jingle also on the page, which makes reference to Columbus margarine. None of the images have been filled in. On the back cover, stamped in ink below "for sale by," is "Hertzler Bros. & Co., General Merchandise, Elizabethtown, Pa." and in the upper left-hand corner, in pencil, "98-90."

    One manufacturer's advertisement/drawing book entitled Slate Drawings for the Young Folks, published by Belding Bros. & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1891. This 16-page booklet is a promotional piece for Belding Bros. & Co.'s silk products as well as an instructional aid. Each page contains several white-on-black illustrations, designed to represent chalk drawings on a drawing slate. Above and below each illustrated page are advertising and promotional statements about Belding Brothers & Co.'s silk thread. The front cover is designed to look like a drawing slate, with the text written on the slate. The insides of the front and back covers are advertisements, as is the back cover. "Lillian Wright, Jan. 4, 1891, Ayer, Mass." is written in ms., in pencil, at the top of the inside front cover.
