Pure Gold Foil

Description: One book of original drawings entitled Pure Gold Foil, created by Herbert G. Wilcox, ca. 1875. The booklet is 22 unnumbered pages in length, and contains 32 numbered and unnumbered original pencil drawings. This drawing book was originally a blank booklet, the front cover reading "1-8 oz. No. 3 Soft. 1000 Pure Gold Foil. Manufactured by Hood & Reynolds, No. 74 Tremont St., Opp. Tremont House, Boston., J. Hood. S.H. Reynolds." Printed on the back cover is a testimonial of the purity of the gold foil, which is dated 1872. The first 9 leaves of the booklet have been cut out, and the first visible page reads "Gems of Arts." (written in ms.) The pencil drawings are mostly numbered, and include images of animals, people and objects. The last few pages are blank. "Herbert G. Wilcox" is written in ms. on the front cover. One book of original drawings entitled Drawing Book, created by Frederick Harris of Springfield, Massachusetts. The drawing book was "Sold by M.J. Whipple & Co., Importers of Artists' Materials" in Boston, ca. 1850. The book is 10 unnumbered leaves in length, and contains 15 original pencil drawings. The front cover is an engraving; an elaborate, decorative frame surrounds the title and three vignettes. The original pencil drawings are primarily of houses and buildings; there is also an image of a modern-looking couch. None of the drawings are signed. "F.H." is written in ms., in ink, on the insides of the covers. "Frederick Harris. Springfield, Mass." is written in ms., in ink, on the front cover.

Our Pets' Portraits Painting Book

One painting book entitled Our Pets' Portraits Painting Book, published by Raphael Tuck & Sons Co., Ltd., New York, London and Paris, ca. 1910. The booklet is part of Father Tuck's Little Artists' Series. This booklet is 24 unnumbered pages in length, and is composed of color and matching outline images for coloring. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a girl painting a portrait of a cat. "Father Tuck's Little Artists Series" is printed in the lower right-hand corner of the front cover. The back cover is a chromolithograph of a boy, dressed in a sailor suit, carving a piece of wood. Printed at the bottom of the back cover are: "No. 3629" below the publisher's logo; "Designed at the Studios in England"; and "Published by Raphael Tuck & Sons, Co., Ltd., New York-London-Paris". The inside of the front cover contains "Instructions for Little Artists", which are continued on the inside back cover. Most of the images have been colored in. "12.50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.

One drawing book entitled The New Progressive Drawing Book, Containing Lithographic Sketches, and Drawings of Landscape Scenery, Designed for Self Instruction, published by C.P. Huestis, New York, 1847. This drawing book is 24 unnumbered pages in length and contains lithograph images only (no text). There are several different images per page, some of which are landscapes and seascapes. Title and publication information on the front cover are within a simple frame ornamented by acorns. The insides of the front and back covers are blank, and the back cover is a publisher's advertisement from C.P. Huestis. "35-" (price) is written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover.

The drawing book is 38 unnumbered pages in length, and contains pencil drawings of women, a few of which have been colored with watercolor. Some of the drawings are labeled. The book is bound in gray cloth; "Wynna Wright 1908, + 1909." is written in ms., in pencil, on the front cover. "Wynna Wright, 8 years old, June 13, 1908" is written in ms. on the first page. A bookseller's label, "G.J. Esselen, Successor to Mrs. J.C. White, 19 Bromfield St., Boston, Mass." is mounted to the lower left-hand corner of the inside back cover. Title supplied by cataloger.

One drawing book of original drawings entitled Sketch Book created by Wynna Wright in 1908. It is bound in tan cloth; the title is stamped in red letters on the front cover. The drawing book is 34 unnumbered leaves in length, and contains pencil drawings of women in early 20th century dress. It is vertically oriented; one flips the pages up rather than from right to left as with a regular book. None of the drawings are signed or dated. "Wynna Wright, 4 Kimball Road, April 12, 1908" is written in ms., in pencil, on the front flyleaf. Tissue paper guard sheets are bound in between each of the leaves.

Self-Instructing Drawing Lessons, for the Little Folks

Visual Materials

One drawing book entitled Self-Instructing Drawing Lessons, for the Little Folks, by John D. F. Brooks, Boston, 1868. This book is 42 unnumbered pages in length and contains numerous line-drawings. Each drawing features a step-by-step number guide for creating a finished drawing. The subjects of these drawings include: a horse, boats, garden tools and equipment, body parts and small scenes. The front cover contains a large circular engraving of three children in a run-down kitchen, one of whom draws while the other two watch. The inside of the front cover contains textual instructions, and the inside of the back cover features other (completed) images. The back cover is an advertisement for Frost & Adams, "importers and dealers in artists' materials". "A.E.C." is written in ms., in ink, at the top of the front cover.
