  One boxed tool for carving labeled Tif- handle with lino-pens, manufactured by Heintze & Blanckertz, Berlin, Germany, ca. 1935. The tool is constructed of a wooden handle into which various carving bits are inserted. A glasseine envelope containing several bits complete the set. Stamped into the handle are "TIF 135, Germany" and "M. Grunbac Germany." The set is housed within a slipcase paperboard box with "Set Nr. 903" printed at one end. The paper covering of the box is in a brown and white bamboo pattern and has black lettering.

  The Practical Use of "Drawlet" Drawing and Lettering Pens

  One booklet entitled The Practical Use of "Drawlet" Drawing and Lettering Pens, published by Esterbrook Pen Mfg. Co., Camden, New Jersey, ca. 1925. This booklet is 16 pages in length, and promotes the use of Drawlet pens. Included are images of the 17 different nibs available, practical instructions, and numerous examples of advertisements, illustrations and lettering samples created using the Drawlet pens. Framing the title on the front cover is a border and an illustration of a parrot holding an umbrella and the back cover is blank except for a small printer's statement in the lower right-hand corner: "Printed in U.S.A. by Patterson & White Co." The inside of the front cover shows "Three Prize Winning Drawings submitted at I.A.D.M. Convention- St. Louis-1925". The inside of the back cover shows three "Convincing illustrations of effective work done with Drawlet Pens."

  One boxed set of watercolor paints, untitled, manufactured by "George W. Osborne, Superfine American Water Colour Manufacturer," Philadelphia, ca. 1830. The set is comprised of 18 small, rectangular cakes of embossed watercolor paint, labeled and housed within a wooden box with a sliding lid. The box is primarily divided into two sections; the upper portion consists of three rows (with wooden dividers) of 6 cakes each of paint; the lower portion is meant to hold brushes, and bears a paper label which reads: "George W. Osborne, Superfine American Water Colour Manufacturer, Philadelphia, Begs leave to recommend his Colours to Artists and Amateurs, as being fully equal to the best imported. They may be had singly or in boxes of all sizes, Wholesale and Retail, of [?]. B. Smith & W. Hodgson, R. Apothecaries, Chemists, and Druggists, North East corner of Arch and 6th streets." Below this, also printed on the label, is an endorsement for these paints from The Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania, dated May 27th, 1826. Also included are two small paintbrushes made of quills, and a small piece of charcoal with Chinese writing on it. Title supplied by cataloger.

The paperboard box is decorated with an American flag paper wrapper, and an additional, illustrated paper label which bears the title and the statement "Made in Germany." The box contains approximately 12 thin pencils, some of which have paper wrappers.

  On The Technique of Manuscript Writing

  One penmanship book entitled On The Technique of Manuscript Writing, by Marjorie Wise, published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta and San Francisco, 1924. On the first page is a series statement: "Series on CHildhood Education, edited by Patty Smith Hill." As stated in the Introduction, this book teaches "English manuscript writing." It begins with 24 pages of introductory and prefatory material, and continues with 54 pages of instructions, lessons, examples and exercises. Opposite each lesson are lined pages on which to practice the lesson. Some of the lessons included are: "Essential forms- the alphabet"; "The beginning of ink work"; "Choice and individuality"; "Spacing" and "Judging the work." None of the lessons have been filled in. Laid in at the front is a publisher's promotional flyer.
