One set of drawing cards entitled Easy Drawing Lessons for Blackboard or Slate, by E. Croasdale, printed by J.M. Stoddart & Co., Philadelphia, 1879. The label identifies E. Croasdale as the "Principal, Philadelphia School of Design for Women." The set is comprised of 36 cards, each containing white images against a black background. Intended for copying, the lessons begin with simple lines and progress to more complex forms. Each card is numbered in the upper left-hand corner and contains two images. For example, card 36 shows a young man holding a baseball bat on the left-hand side and on the right-hand side a cricket bat, ball and wickets. Printed on one side of the wrapper is: "Edwards & Docker, Box Makers, 418 Market St., Philadelphia." Original price for the cards, 25 cents.

Krüsi's Drawing: Synthetic Series

One drawing book entitled Krüsi's Drawing: Synthetic Series, New series, No. 2, published by D. Appleton & Co., New York, copyright 1878. This book consists of 16 pages of geometric designs, which emphasize the practice of lines and shapes. Suggestions to Teachers are printed on the inside of the front cover, and specifics of line drawing are outlined on the inside of the back cover. On each page are the illustrations and space intended for copying. The front cover is decoratively bordered; the back cover is a publisher's advertisement for Model Copy-Books in six numbers (penmanship studies), offered by D. Appleton & Co. Laid inside the book are three sheets of paper, two of which are blank. The third contains several original illustrations. A blue ownership stamp of I.A. Dexter is on the front cover.

Six drawing books entitled American Text-Books of Art Education, Revised Edition, Nos. 5, 7, 7, 9, 10, 14, published by L. Prang & Co., Boston, copyright 1879. These drawing books are each 20 pages in length and include numbered lessons, each with instructional text, lithograph illustrations, and space for copying. The front cover is decoratively bordered, the title centered. The inside of the front covers contain a "Special Notice to Teachers", which provides instructional information for using this series. On each of the back covers is a publisher's advertisement for "A System of Industrial and Artistic Drawing for Public Schools (Revised Edition)." The insides of the back covers of Books 7, 9, 10 and 14 are blank. The insides of the back covers of the remaining books contain publisher's advertisements. The books range in complexity from relatively simple to more complex; and the same range exists within each of the books. The exercises range from simple shapes and angles (in Book No. 5) to more complex images, such as scenes and views which include projection and perspective (in Book 14). Book No. 5 appears to focus on the creation of shapes and patterns based on geometric forms; Book 7 (both copies) focuses on tracing and transferring; Book 8 emphasizes freehand drawing from models (objects and plant life); Book 9 focuses on rectangular forms and historic styles in design; Book 10 emphasizes simple shapes and angles, ornamental designs and borders; and Book 14 focuses on projection and perspective. Book 14 is lacking the first 2 leaves, therefore the first 4 exercises are missing. Some of the images have been copied by previous owners, and some of the books contain sheets with original artwork laid in. "David Anderson" is written in ms. on the front cover of Book No. 7 (one of the 2 copies). Book No. 5 is smaller than the other books in the series. The dimensions provided are for Books Nos. 7-14.

Introductory Lessons in Drawing and Painting in Water-Colors

One art instruction book entitled Introductory Lessons in Drawing and Painting in Water-Colors, by Marion Kemble, published by S.W. Tilton & Company, Boston, copyright 1882. Following a preface and an introduction, the book is informally divided into 4 sections, the first of which is entitled "Perspective". The remaining sections are: "Water colors," "Directions for coloring". The book is 66 pages in length, with an additional 13 unnumbered pages of testimonials and advertisements at the end. Two pages of publisher's advertisements for "Self-Instructive Lessons in drawing and painting in water-colors" precede the title page. Each section within the book is illustrated with line drawings; the section entitled "Directions for coloring" contains 7 full-page illustrations. Of these, 6 are numbered and are accompanied by textual instruction for painting. The back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "Bulfinch's Mythology. The Age of Fable" edited by Rev. E.E. Hale. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. "H.N.[?] Gey.[?]" is written in ms. in ink, in the upper right-hand corner, "V.B. Cummings" is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the front cover.

Album Mondiale di Disegni per Ricami

Two Italian pattern books. The first is entitled Album Mondiale di Disegni per Ricami. "Serie N. 51" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the title page. Sixteen unnumbered pages in length, this is a pattern book for embroidery and lace designs. The pages are printed in blue ink. The second pattern book is missing the front cover and at least the first 2 pages. What appears to be a running title is printed in the upper left-hand corner of each page: Riservati tutti i Diritti. This incomplete book is 34 unnumbered pages in length, with an additional 4 pages of manufacturer's advertisements at the end. The 34 pages of patterns are printed in white on black paper, and are labeled "Tavola" I-XV. "Tipografia della Societa anonima Dollfus-Meig & Co." is printed at the bottom of the last page of advertisements. The back cover is decorated with the stylized initals "DMC."

The Eldorado Page, Sketching with "the master drawing pencil"

Six advertisements entitled The Eldorado Page, Sketching with "the master drawing pencil," published by Joseph Dixon Crucible Co., Jersey City, New Jersey, ca. 1920-1940. These 6 sheets are promotional advertisements for Dixon pencils and feature aspects of pencil-drawing technique. Sheet No. 1 is "Area Technique"; No. 2 is "A Discussion of the Center of the Sketch"; No. 3 is "Notation of Procedure"; No. 4 is "Exercises"; No. 5 is "How to Sketch Evergreen Foliage"; and No. 6 is "The White Door". All of the illustrations and instructional text are by Ernest W. Watson, who was an instructor at the Pratt Institute. The six pages were originally published in various issues of an unnamed magazine.
