Water Color School Box

One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled Water Color School Box, manufactured by Wadsworth, Howland & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1895. The set is comprised of 10 small cakes of watercolor paint set within two rows of metal supports, one quill brush, one wooden stick, and a small stick of charcoal. The set is housed within a metal box; the lid is divided into four sections: the top two sections contain the manufacturer's name and address, the bottom two contain the title. The box is colored green and has gold lettering. A printed slip of paper is laid into the bottom of the box underneath the two rows of paints, so only a portion of it is legible: "When you need more of any of the colors in this box we will furnish them at short notice. Wadsworth, Howland & Co., Inc."

Two advertisement flyers from the O-P Craft Co., Inc., of Sandusky, Ohio, circa 1935. Env. 1 contains a 4-page reprint from Everyday Art Magazine entitled "The Growing Popularity of Home and School Crafts" by Earle F. Opie. The magazine excerpt describes the "pleasures and possibilities" of art craft work and promotes the use of O-P Craft products. The flyer is illustrated with both completed and incomplete projects (e.g. examples of crayonexing, carving). Envelope 2 contains a 6-page (i.e. a single sheet folded into thirds) illustrated flyer/catalog of O-P Craft products and supplies entitled "O-P Craft Articles for Hand Decoration: Projects of Beauty for Home, Gift, or Profit." Some of the items offered for sale are O-P Craft color charts, Crayonex crayons, paint-by-number fabric designs, Prang tempera paints and craft mats. Title supplied by cataloger.

One pamphlet entitled Munsell Color System, (a reprint of the article "A Measured Training of the Color Sense," by Albert H. Munsell , which appeared in Education, February, 1909) published by Wadsworth, Howland & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, 1910. This pamphlet is 22 numbered pages in length, and is illustrated with black and white images. The last page is blank. The next to the last page (p. 21) advertises "materials for the Munsell Color System" offered by Wadsworth, Howland & Co.

One boxed painting set entitled Craft Master, New Artist Series...18, with the sub-title "NA-1807, Forest Creatures", manufactured by Craft Master Corporation, 1966. A paint-by-number system, the kit includes paints, numbered 1 through 18; 2 paint brushes; and 2 prepared canvasses, each bearing an image outlined and numbered to correspond with the paints in the set. Instructions for painting are printed on the box. The set does not appear to have been used.

One boxed set of paints entitled Bradley's Water Colors: Master Art Tubes, manufactured by the Milton Bradley Company, Springfield, Massachusetts, ca. 1915. The set is comprised of three triangular glass dishes, 9 tubes of paint and several paint brushes. The set is housed within an orange and black- colored paperboard box, with the number "4024" printed below the manufacturer's name. This set has been used; only 3 tubes of paint remain and 4 paint brushes and 1 fragment of a paint brush are in the box. All have been used.

Superfine Painting Colors

One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled Superfine Painting Colors, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1880. The set is comprised of 40 rectangular, embossed cakes of watercolor paint, two round porcelain dishes, two paint brushes, and two embossed cakes of charcoal. The set is housed within a wooden box with a sliding lid. The paints are divided into 5 rows of 8 each, and each cake of paint is embossed with an image of a family crest. The lid is not labeled; a label is affixed, however, to the bottom of the paint brush compartment.
