View of San Francisco, in 1871
Rare Books
This image is a modification of the illustration used for "San Francisco in 1861" (according to Baird). The houses at the lower left and right replace the foliage and fence of the earlier state. St. Francis Church on Vallejo Street, Grace Church, the correct spires of St. Mary's, and several other additions have been made to the view of the city. The harbor can be seen in the distance. Baird also notes that this variant is the same illustration as the one in "View of San Francisco, in 1869," just with the date changed. Paper color: blue.

Two figures are standing on the hill in the foreground. Baird notes that this is a "rough but effective" reworking of the stone used for "San Francisco, 1854." San Francisco in 1849
Rare Books
Image of town buildings, the harbor with several ships in it to the left, the hills in the background, and several tents and small figures in the foreground. Buildings and places of particular interest are numbered in the image, and these numbers correspond to a list beneath the image. "Drawn and Engraved by Thomas Armstrong, in the Fall of 1849, and re-published by A. Rosenfield, (late of Hutchings and Rosenfield), No. 602 Montgomery Street, near Clay, San Francisco."--text, below image. Baird notes that the topography and details of the image are incorrect, and that this is apparently an issue of the early 1860's and not 1849. Paper color: buff.
