Portrait of a Union Army drummer boy with his mother. The boy's coat buttons are hand-colored gold. Enclosed in case was a handwritten drilling schedule titled "Drummers Calls for Daily Duty" from "Head Quarters, U.S. Forces, Port Hudson, Aug. 17, 1863. General Order No. 16" and is signed "By command of Brig. General George L. Andrews / George B. Halsteed [sic], Capt. & A.A.G." This manuscript is cataloged separately, see mssHM 54994. Correct name is: George B. Halsted (1820-1911).

Ruth is in the center, with her body turned very slightly to the right, wearing a dark dress with lighter sleeves and a high neck, with her dark, wavy hair parted in the center and pulled back. Georgie, on the left, has his body turned very slightly to the right, is behind his mother, wearing a dark suit with a broad white collar, and has short blond hair. Annie, on the right, is turned slightly to the left, in front of her mother, is wearing a white, lacy dress, and has blond hair that reaches her shoulders, with bangs cut low across her brow.

Patton, on the left, is wearing tan pants, a belt with a circular metal buckle, a dark jacket with numerous decorations, and a beige shirt and tie. There are three stars on his shoulders and collar. His body is turned very slightly to the right, with his head turned partially to the right, towards Graves. Graves, on the right, is wearing dark pants and a tan jacket, and is holding a helmet under his left arm.
