Portrait of a Union Army drummer boy with his mother. The boy's coat buttons are hand-colored gold. Enclosed in case was a handwritten drilling schedule titled "Drummers Calls for Daily Duty" from "Head Quarters, U.S. Forces, Port Hudson, Aug. 17, 1863. General Order No. 16" and is signed "By command of Brig. General George L. Andrews / George B. Halsteed [sic], Capt. & A.A.G." This manuscript is cataloged separately, see mssHM 54994. Correct name is: George B. Halsted (1820-1911).

A studio portrait of a Union drummer boy with his mother. The boy is standing on the left, turned slightly to the right, and is resting his left hand on his mother's shoulder. The mother is seated, wearing a wide skirted dress with dark lines of trim on the sleeves and skirt, with lace decorations at the cuffs and the collar, and with a cameo brooch at the center of the collar. The photograph is mounted in a dark brown case lined with red velvet, within a gilt-decorated setting.
