Provenance: Published literature suggests that the parent volume was written perhaps for a nunnery, perhaps in East Anglia, and was perhaps volume III of a four-volume set of which volume I is now London, British Library, Royal MS 1 E.iv. Owned by Richard Legh in 1613 (perhaps Richard Legh, b. 1549?, of East Hall, High Legh, Cheshire, or Richard Legh, b. 1554, of West Hall, High Legh): the last leaf of the parent volume, now Bodleian, MS. Lat. bib. b. 4, fol. 46v (formerly fol. 413v in the parent volume), is inscribed "Rich(ard)us Legh me possidet Anno Domini 1613" (the first four words repeated below, but crossed through in both cases). Richard Maria Domville (b. 1600 or 1603?, d. 1667), of Lymme Hall (about 2 miles from High Legh), eldest son and heir of Edward (d. 1639) and Eleanor (née Leycester). Sir Peter Leycester/Leicester (1614-78), antiquarian and historian (on whom see ODNB), of Nether Tabley (about 5 miles from High Legh), presented by Domville on 27 March 1665: below the Legh inscription on the Bodleian leaf is "Ex libris Petri Leicester de Nether-Tabley: qui liber mihi Dono datur a Richardo Maria Dumvill de Limme Armigero, 27 die Martij, Anno Domini 1665". The Bible appears in Sir Peter's library catalogue as follows: "Part of a greate Latine Bible in Manuscript: a fayre character with greate Gold-Letters contayninge the Proverbs & all the Prophets, about the tyme of Henry VI, as I conjecture, it was writ. [size:] Largest Folio [shelf:] D:8 [category:] Divinity" (Cheshire Record Office, DLT/B88, page 1). Inscribed on various leaves, noting losses of illuminated initials and whole leaves, e.g. "The first chapter is torne out" (Bodleian, fol. 1v), "The beginning of the Canticles is torne out to the 6th verse of the second chapter" (Bodleian, fol. 3r), "The letter here basely cut out with some other wordes therewith" (Bodleian, fol. 22v). The imperfect parent volume was apparently dismembered by Myers and Co., of New Bond St, London, in 1926/7; . Sold (with ff. 329 and 331) at Sotheby's, 21 June 1994, lot 19[c]; bought by Maggs for £2,070 including buyer's premium. Maggs Bros, European Bulletin 20 (1995) no. 45 priced £1200; apparently no. 1 in a later Maggs catalogue; bought by Mary Vaiana, of Los Angeles, and given by her to the Huntington in November 2007.

Bible in the usual order with 66 prologues (of which approx. 2/3 correspond to those listed in Ker, MMBL 1:96-97 regarding London, Lambeth Palace MS 1364); of the frequent apocryphal additions to Bibles, only the prayer of Solomon is present, but marked "va-cat.". Part 2. ff. i - iv verso. [Pastedowns and flyleaves]: Contains parts of the commentary on chapters 2 and 3 of the Gospels of John; text is washed off.

Berger, Histoire de la Vulgate (Paris 1893) 143. On this Paris manuscript and the"Italian group," see H. Quentin, Mémoire sur l'établissement du texte de la Vulgate (Rome-Paris 1922) 361-84. The text is divided by a pre-Langton system of capitulation, and has prologues. On f. 1, the gloss is headed"ex commentario anbrosii [sic] super epistolas"; however, the gloss is the one generally attributed to Anselm of Laon,"Pro altercatione.". front f. iii recto-verso; back f.i recto-verso.
