Kashnor notes, "Remarkable from its showing of California as a peninsula, the earliest American cartographers having more correct ideas than their immediate successors. Tierra del Fuego appears, however, as part of that immense southern continent which so long obsessed the minds of geographers. The Philippines and New Guinea also appear, the latter as an island. In the midst of the ocean is a fine cut representing a galleon in full sail, with the following verse: "Prima ego velivolis ambivi cursibus Orbem, Magallane novo te duce ducta freto. Ambivi, meritoque vocor Victoria: sunt mi Vela, alae; precium, gloria; pugna, mare." [No maps showed California as an island prior to 1624 with the exception of Cortez' earlier manuscript map giving him domain over offshore islands.] Appeared in information based on Van der Krogt and Burden: was published in Van der Krogt, atlas 31:040.     In notes for that map Kashnor notes, "Very rare. The cartographer follows the map of Captain John Smith, published in 1612. The next after the above map was again issued by Smith in his Virginia Discovered, 1625." Kashnor dates as [1619]. Others have added manuscript guesses to this copy of 1628 and 1630. Date as established by Burden and Van der Krogt based on pagination on verso. State 1 of map, according to Burden; appeared in according to Van der Krogt (atlas 1:312). According to Burden, Blaeu purchased the plate for this map from Hondius's widow shortly after Hondius's death in 1629; the map first appeared in Blaeu's atlases in 1630 (Burden, entry 193).
