[Captain Thomas James map of Hudson's Bay] unlabeled
Visual Materials
Kashnor notes, " A lithographic reprint of the rare original published in 1633. The James Map was the only source from which cartographers took their coastline of Hudson's Bay until Middleton published his map in 1745, the old maps only having the localities known to the Hudson Bay Company captains. It was one of the first English maps to give the coast line of upper California, in which is located the present San Francisco under the name of Sr. Draco." This map follows the 1656 Sanson model for northern California, so the original may have been published later than Kashnor's date. Fox running with goose in mouth.. Prime meridian: Ferro. Relief: no. Projection: Polar. Watermark: Fenced lion with sword. Printing Process: Lithography. Other Features: Figures . Verso Text: MS note: 440.

To Arthur Dobbs, Rowland Fry, James Douglas, Henry Douglas, John Tomlinson, Robert Macky, William Bowden and Samuel Smith, Esqrs. This Chart of the Coast where a Northwest Passage was attempted under their direction in the years 1746 and 1747, is most respectfully dedicated by their Agent & very humble Servt. Henry Ellis
Visual Materials
Kashnor notes, "This expedition is commonly associated with the name of Ellis in consequence of his having written an account of it in his book, 'A Voyage to Hudson's Bay, by the Dobbs Galley and California,' 1748. He was nominally agent for the committee, but in reality hydrographer and surveyor. The net result of the expedition was the decision that the long-sought passage could not lie through Hudson's Bay. Sayer, the map maker, appears to have come into possession of the old plate, but this is the first issue of the map." Map contains notes regarding the exploration of several possible passages.
