Imperfect: only the left half of the lower part remaining; torn along edges with some loss of text and illustrations. Mounted on a blank leaf.

True it is· that after the noble [and] experte doctryne . The last leaf contains William Caxton's device, and on the verso a copy of the title-page cut. Chancery folio, with paper measuring 30.9 x 21.2 cm. Text in two columns. Woodcut initials. Signatures: A⁶ B⁸ b⁶ c-z⁸ [et]⁶ [con]⁸ A-V⁸ X-Z⁶ 2a-2c⁸ 2d-2g⁶ 2h-2m⁸ 2n⁴ 2o⁶. There are several variants of this edition, which had two distinct issues. The second issue, first state, corrected minor errors in the text, but not the date of publication, expanded the content of the fourth tract, and included two additional woodcut illustrations. The second issue, second state finally corrected the date of publication to read ".M.cccc.xcvii." Chancery folio, with paper measuring 26.9 x 18.8 cm. Text printed in 2 columns of 42-43 lines and headline; col. width: 6.1 cm.; area of text: 19.6 (20.5) x 13.3 cm. With foliation and signatures; without catchwords. Includes 48 mostly full- or half-page woodcut illustrations (many are repeated). Generally, they depict the master surgeon, his apprentices, his patients, and his instruments in a variety of scenarios. There are also 3 smaller sets of illustrations of surgical instruments within the text. The second issue contains two additional woodcut illustrations.--Cf. Schramm. Numerous foliation errors. Consists of two series of 20 leaves, one lettered a-v and the second .a.-.v.. Leaves printed on one side only. Printed in brown ink. Huntington Library copy is an early impression of Schreiber edition VI, as the newly recut plates p-q, .c.-.d., .l.-.m. and .t.-.v. do not show the damage to the woodblocks seen in other copies of edition VI. Imperfect: ten leaves lacking (leaves a-b, g-m and .n.-.o.). Many leaves faded. Huntington Library copy misbound when rebound for Pembroke; now in following order: leaves c-f, .p.-.t., v, .v., .a.-.m., n-t. Leaf v detached and kept in a separate folder. Blank leaves pasted together; most leaves faded. Binding: 19th century English gilt-tooled red morocco, in red morocco solander case.
